The High Roller

by Blake Gills

As a young married man years ago, I found myself with several children, and very little money left at the end of the month.  My wife and I were both working, and with the kids, I also found there was little time and money left for fishing....my one very strong weakness.

Working shift work, I would have some days where it was just my baby daughter and I at home.  There were only a few things I could do, having to watch her as an infant, but I did find one thing that satisfied me, and I could do it and take care of her also.....widdlin'!..I thought to myself one day..."why can't I make my own fishing lures, instead of buying those expensive lures that I couldn't really afford?"  So I did!...I have always carried a pocket knife, and there was always some sandpaper laying around in my shop...

I started with a piece of balsa wood, purchased from a local hobby plane store.  I would carve ever so diligently taking care not to gouge the wood...sanding carefully not to leave any marks. I wanted them to look as good as the store bought ones, and guess what,  They didn't...but they caught fish like crazy.  I started putting thought into my carvings, "what does the fish want", I thought. Something that looks like a minnow or baitfish fleeing for it's life!

The bass feeds sometimes without thinking, except that another fish is going to get something that he is not!...I watched the lakes and ponds, looking for something that would give me the idea of the perfect lure.  I kept seeing those minnows and shad jumping out of the water right before their certain death!..BAM...they would be gone!....nothing but a swirl of water left...saying to myself, "OK, I have to make something jump out of the water just like I had seen"  Well.....8 months later after widdlin' and spittin', trying this and that, I said "To heck with it....I'm going fishing!"

I had been making a lure out of balsa wood that was smaller at the front, and larger at the rear, and I took several of them with me for the trip.  After getting on the lake, the wind got up a little, and I couldn't cast as far as I wanted to, so I crimped a split shot to the rear hook of one of the lures I had created.....It casted Great, but after it landed in the water, I gave it a couple of jerks!....It jumped completely out of the water, and BAM....a 3 pound black bass nailed it!!  I couldn't believe what had just happened!!...Finally I had accomplished what I had been trying to do for months!!....I pulled the fish off the lure, and casted again....same thing happened!   After catching about 10 bass, I finally said, " If I keep doing this, I'm gonna' loose this sucker!"....so I put my rods up, and went home!!

It goes to prove, you never know when to keep going, or to just give up!...the good lord is the only one who really knows!...But, after all these years, there is nothing more rewarding, than to hear from thousands of people that love your creation, and the proof is in the fishing!

If you get a chance to fish a Highroller, don't pass it up.  There are a lot of topwater fishing lures on the market, but none as versatile as the Highroller.  It will jump completely out of the water, dive up to 2 feet, and walk the dog better than any other lure I have seen!...This is not my opinion, these are the facts, from fishermen all over the world!  From coast to coast, I get reports on a daily basis of the fish caught on the Highroller.   The next time you go fishing, think of me.....I will be thinking of you!  This is what I do!

Walk the dog, Shake the stick, Roll the bones, Jump the fence, the "HighRoller" is the  most versatile top water lure you have ever seen.   This bait slices, dices, splashes, jumps, and dives like a true bait fish.  It's erratic action entices ferocious strikes from the most stubborn of fish.
