This is the second in a series of articles highlighting interesting products for 1999 for fishermen and women. I have used all of the products listed in this series during my pleasure fishing and/or tournament fishing. My goal is to introduce you to new or improved products, to help you catch more fish and increase the enjoyment of your outdoor experience.

Part Two: 1999 Product Review
Norman Lures

There are two new baits from Norman Lures for the 1999-fishing season that I highly recommend. As you are probably aware, Norman Lures has been around for a long time. They are an icon in the fishing industry and continue to prove their worth by developing new products to help the fisherperson catch more fish.

First, Norman Lures introduces, my personal favorite, The "Wake". It is so named because of the tremendous wake produced during the retrieve of the bait. It is the perfect shallow running crankbait. You can literally see the wake on the surface of the water as you reel it in. The "Wake" bounces off of cover, such as logs and laydowns, and clips the top of shallow vegetation like a dream.

It is a great alternative to the spinnerbait in shallow water. I like its ability to be stopped in a likely strike zone, allowing less aggressive fish more time to strike. It comes with the same super sharp hooks Norman Lures is known for. The "tougher-than-nails" gelcote finish is same as found on the other Norman baits. It is sure to become a top seller.

The new Razor Minnow jerkbait is one of the first jerkbaits to feature flat sides and a narrow cross section creating a more baitfish profile. During retrieve the Razor Minnow has a medium to wide wiggle that signals predator fish to react and bite. The unique design of the bait allows the normal #6 treble hooks to be replaced by larger #4 treble hooks for stronger hook-ups. These baits also come with super-sharp hooks right out of the package.

The Razor Minnow has built-in sound chambers, with rattles, to better attract fish and cause them to strike. The hologram clown color pattern is my personal favorite along with the purple/chartreuse. This new "state-of-the-art" jerkbait comes in several color patterns to meet any water conditions you might face. If you are looking for a new alternative to the jerkbait fishing, give the new Razor Minnow a try. Solar Bat Eye Protection

Each morning as I am getting ready to leave the house, whether to go fishing or go to work, I have to stop long enough to put my contacts in or wear my glasses. Without them, I can't see a thing, at least clearly. If anyone knows the importance of protecting your eyesight, it's me. Our eyesight is something we take for granted, everyday. When you are going out for a day on the water, to fish, ski or whatever, it is important to take care of your eyes. There are several dangers to your eyes while out on the water. My choice of eye protection while on the water is Solar Bat Eye Protection. Solar Bat glasses were designed and developed by eye care specialist. They come in different styles and lens colors to meet your personal preferences and needs.

For the fisherman, there are polarized lenses to aid you in seeing through the glare on the water. This is especially important when sight-fishing. It also helps you see underwater obstacles near the surface, better than other glasses, which are not polarized. If you spend much time out on the water during the summer months, chances are you use a sunscreen to protect your skin from burning. What are you using to protect your eyes from burning? Solar Bat's New Bateye Polarized Sunglasses, like the ones I use, offer total UV protection from the sun's damaging rays. It is like a sunscreen for your eyes, only better. Looking through these glasses is like looking through a cool glass of water.

Finally, the Bateye sunglasses will protect your eyes while operating your boat. It helps keep water, bugs and other eye irritating or damaging things out of your eyes, while running out across the water. This important fact, is often overlooked by many boaters. The new Bateye sunglasses feature the innovative Noctular lens system. These lenses are made from impact-resistant polycarbonate lens shaped to a perfect optical-quality shape. They come in gray for bright sunny days and brown for cloudy or early morning light conditions. The unique faceform lens system uses three metal pegs to secure the lenses to the frame, which also make the lenses interchangeable with the available replacement lenses. It also comes in a non-interchangeable blue mirror lens. Solar Bat warrants the sunglasses for five years, making them a great value, as well as a great way to protect your eyes and improve your vision on the water.

If your eyesight is important to you, as mine is to me, see your local tackle dealer about the new Solar Bat Bateye Sunglasses or contact Solar Bat at 800-761-8228.

Until next time, enjoy the Texas outdoors.
