This is the third in a series of articles highlighting interesting products for 1999 for fishermen and women. I have used all of the products listed in this series during my pleasure fishing and/or tournament fishing. My goal is to introduce you to new or improved products, to help you catch more fish and increase the enjoyment of your outdoor experience.

P Line

Imagine yourself out on the lake, fishing. Suddenly, you feel the subtle detection of a fish at the end of you line. You set the hook and the battle begins. Suddenly, the fish dives deep and starts taking line. You're thinking two things, how big is the fish and is your line up to the challenge. I can't help you with the size of the fish, but I can with the line.

Last fall, while fishing at Lake Fork, I was introduced to a relatively new fishing line called P Line. Although P Line has been on the market for some time, the CXX extra strong fishing line is new and is taking the market by storm for the serious fishermen. Its copolymer construction offers tremendous abrasion resistance by incorporating a special coating. P Line is outperforming every major competitor by as much as 40% in line breaking strength test.

Another desirable characteristic of P Line's CXX series fishing line is the low memory it has, even in cold weather conditions. This is desirable to achieve maximum distance in your casting and plays an important role in being able to watch your line while finesse fishing. With the line lying limp on the water, subtle strikes are more easily detected, visually. I feel that I am getting 15-20% more distance on long cast than I was with the line I was using previously.

P Line is available in three styles. The original is a small diameter, clear line used to improve castability and use to enhance presentation, especially in clear water. The CXX extra strong line is used when strength and abrasion resistance are needed. The Premium CX is P Line's clear fluorescent copolymer line. It is fluorocarbon coated for greater abrasion resistance and lower visibility in the water. With three types available, I am sure P Line has a line to fit any of your angling needs.

Stors It: Rod storage system

Like most bass fishermen, I carry a large number of rods and reels to the lake with me when I go fishing. Most of my rods stay in the rod storage compartment of my boat. I generally pull out the rods I want, put them on the deck of the boat and leave the others in the rod box, until I need them. One of the biggest problems I've encountered is how to effectively store 10-15 rods without them all tangling together in one small area. I now have the solution to my dilemma, Stor's It rod storage system.

This is one of the neatest products to come out since sliced bread. The Stor's It system is made of a vinyl-like material that slips over your rod and has a rubber band at the end of it to wrap around the reel and hold itself on. With these covers on your rods, you can reach to the bottom of the rod box and pull out any rod you want without it getting tangled up with the other rods. The covers come in a variety of lengths and come in two styles: one for casting rods and one for the larger eyed spinning rods.

I recently fished in a pro-am tournament at Toledo Bend reservoir and used these rod covers. I spooled all of my reels, tied on all of my baits and slid covers on all of my rods and stored them in the rod box. The following morning after arriving at my fishing spot, I opened the rod box and pulled out exactly the rods I wanted without having to waste valuable time and effort untangling rods. I instantly became a big fan of these covers. Throughout the day, as I wanted another rod, all I had to do was pull it out, remove the cover and start fishing. Sliding the cover off of all the rods I used during the entire day took less time than it takes to untangle my rods one time.

The covers also protect your rods. Since the eyelets are inside the covers, you need not worry about popping out a ceramic insert on your guides. It also protects your fishing line from crimps and kinks that occur when rods tangle up in the rod box saving you the time and frustration of retying before you every make a cast. Finally, the covers are great for transporting rods in the car, truck or SUV by offering you and your rods protection.

Until next time, enjoy the Texas Outdoors.
