First on a shakyhead!

Why me!?

Well, I caught the bird's nest anyway. A pretty bad one too. I had to cut out a lot of line, but I had more than enough left to fish.

I threw my buzzer out under a ceder tree on the bank and got a good strike, but missed the fish. So, I casted back over the same sot and pulled slower, and wham! Not a big bass, but these topwater strikes are violent. I love it!

However, I hooked the poor thing in the head. The hook got him through the eye, and came out the bone in his head. It ripped him open pretty good, and he lost the eye. I am very upset about this. He seemed ok, but I know that he could still succumb to stress, and/or infection.

The second one was my first on a shakyhead worm. Of course I was using my Creme worms for it. I have considered this lure before, but never tried it. I actually have mixed feelings about it. It seems to me that the strike/hookup ratio is quite low. I have lost every fish except one that I have hooked with this method. Including a big one tonight that I got on shore but came unhooked and flopped back into the lake before I could get to him. I don't plan to give up though. It is a fun way to fish, if not a little slow. I was using a Gammy skipgap with round jighead, and a watermelon red flake 6" worm.

I'm wanting to really get into fishing for bass after dark. I have a bunch of questions that are, well stupid I guess. First of all, how do you guys see what the heck your casting at? Every time I stay on the lake fishing after dark I always seem to spend more time getting my lures out of tree limbs or off the bank than fishing. I have enough light in the boat to see how to change lures and retie but without the ability to see the bank, tree top, laydown, or whatever it is I'm casting to it seems to be a counter productive manner of fishing.
I have seen guys use blacklights on their boats to see thier line while night fishing but I use alot of flouro that doesn't glow under uv light.
My next question is, Can I use blue or green leds rope lights to light up the area I'm fishing (from the boat to the bank) without affecting the fish? Or would the rope lights even put out enough light to do that?
Lastly, What are some of the best setups (ie, lights, light colors, and mounting options) available.

Thanks DJ

Do we want to tentatively discuss a 2011 event? Personally, I would love something like that to look forward to, as I still have met and fished with far too few of you. Our time on this Earth is just too short to not go fishing with friends.

Shall we officially get the discussion going?

4oz

I took my second and third bass on buzzbaits today. The first one came on a Strike King buzzer with a tri-blade, and white skirt. It's the very same lure that jay let me use to catch my first buzzbait bass. The second fish was caught on a $1.00 "Wal-Mart Special", that I modified as per this YouTube video, and added a Redfish Magic swimbait to. I got that fish on the first cast.

I got the last fish on a Blaze crankbait in chartreuse and blue.

All three were dinks, but seeing as how I have struck out recently, I'll take what I can get. I am still surprised how violently they hit those buzzbaits. The 13 ounce fish had me convinced it was better than two pounds before I got a good look at it. All in all it was a pretty good day on the lake.

Well, after putting this reel through the paces for two solid days catching smallies, I have my own review.

I'll compare this to the reel models that I currently own (Curado 201Bs, Curado Original SF, Curado 101Bs, BPS Extremes, and a BPS Pro Qualifier.

Casting Distance:

Curado 201B, 101B > A+ (these reels just can't be beat in this category)
Curado SF > B+
Pro Qualifier > B
Revo STX > B
BPS Extreme > B-
Overall smoothness of the retrieve:
Drag
Pro Qualifier > B
BPS Extreme > B

Feel/Comfort

Curado(s) > A+ (Shimano has the most comfortable reels ever made IMHO)
Pro Qualifier > A+
BPS Extreme > A
Revo STX > D - I'll be wondering forever why they decided to have the magnetic brake protruding from the side plate.

Construction

Curado(s) > A+
Pro Qualifier > A+
BPS Extreme > A
Revo STX > A - I'll will give it an A just because it seems solid, even though it should be knocked down a little because the thumbbar on the one I got has a very rough edge on the one closest to the spool.

Overview -

IMHO, this is not a $199 reel. Even at the $119.00 price I paid, I think it's a little high. If I had it to do over again, I would have just got another Pro Qualifier, or a Shimano Citica. I will probably just put this one back in the box, and keep it in my boat for a backup.

I said 8 years ago that I'd never own another Abu. I should have stuck to my guns I guess.
