Default Hooks question

What kind of hooks do you guys use for worms? I've been using Gamakatsu offset worm hooks. I think usually a 3/0 or 4/0 for like 6 inch worms. I'm going to try to mess with wacky senkos this year and need to know what hooks to get for that and for those plastic shad jerkbaits/creature baits. Thanks.

I hear some use the EWG (extra wide gap).

I've used both brands and I like them both. I use the same hooks for both creature and soft jerk baits as well. I would think a short shank wide gap hook in say a size 2/0 for a 4 to 6 inch worm would work well for wacky rigging, although I have not personally used that technique.

I mainly fish with a barbed straight shank Eagle Claw. 1/0 for my 4" plastics and 3/0 for the 6". I keep a few 4/0 and 5/0 for 10", but I rarely fish them. I recently bought a few Gammy with EWG and drop shot hooks and starting to try them out.

I used a 2/0 EWG worm hook for wacky rigging last year. My hook ratio to lost fish went way up. I was using a smaller 1/0 split shot hook and missed a lot of fish.

Just my .02

Use wide gapes and EWG's for big hefty baits like brush hogs and, sweet beavers. Use straight shanks for thinner baits! I thing you going just fine with you senko hook!

With the wacky rig, use a smaller hook, or light jig head. 1/0 offset, ot 1/0 octopus for 6" baits, and 2/0-3/0 or 7-8" baits and..... I think you get the picture, bigger baits, bigger hooks!

btw my three favorite hooks are:
Gamakatsu
Owner
and lazer sharp hooks for cheepish hooks.

Good luck!

For worms, Iuse 3/0-5/0 Gammy EWGs. For wacky rigging, pick up some Gammy octopus hooks in 1 or 1/0.

I tried the 5/0 Gammy EWG offsets the other day and was a little disappointed with them. I was using them on a horny toad and a soft jerkbait. I was fishing a lily pad field in clear water, and I was really having to sling out to keep from spooking the fish. I would get about 10 throws and the bait would start slipping off the turn and folding up. That is 1 of my urks. I don't have this problem with the barbed straight hooks. I didn't have much trouble with them though if I was easy casting.

3/0,4/0 and 5/0 Gamakatsu or Owner EWG for almost all my T rigged plastics depending on the size of the bait.

You should match your hook to the size of bait you are using. Using too large of hook can take away from the bait's action. Most people recommend a 2/0 hook on a 6-7" worm, although I normally use use 2/0 and 3/0 offset hook on a 7" turtleback worm. I've tried different brand names but don't really have a preference.

I was using a 5/0 in a lily pad field. I was really manning up on my cast though, too. My flukes don't usually make it 150+, LOL. It was more of a problem with the horny toads though. I went Saturday and tried them out again with less aggressive casting and they did better.
