Fishing the Graveyard
On the Potomac River (and the James River) there are areas in which old ships have been salvaged and the remains have been left to rust and rot away. These skeleton's are good places to catch fish if you know how to fish them. Here's a few pics of a place I call the Graveyard. Just make sure you go in on low tide so you know where the wrecks are and you don't impale your boat on one of the spikes .
Included is a pic of my best fish to date on the Magic Swimmer. Last edited by 3dkicker; 07-14-09 at 07:32 PM. |

John Mallows after WW1 purchased 72 wooden troop carriers from the Ford plant in old town Alexandria. He paid 49 bucks for each one. He then dragged two or three at time in to Mallows Bay and closed the gates in to the bay. Big pumps reduced the water level and the men would remove all metal/brass and anything of value to sell. After that they would be pushed out into the main river where they where burned down to the water line. If stationed in Quantico during WW2 you could see the "swamp fires" at night.
Now let me share something. There is a pond behind all the ships. But you need a double hull tin boat to get there safely. Google map this location 38.470995, -77.267168 The pond is new since that pic.. Capt Mike

Looks like Mallows Bay (Potomac River). I've left pieces of my skeg in there, not to mention countless jigs. If you look at Google Maps and zoom in on the bay, you can see all the wrecks, pictures must have been taken around low tide. Mallows is on the east side of the river a couple miles south of Mattawoman creek. Must be 80 or so in there. Capt. is right, it's freakin' scary in there.

I would post some fish porn from there. Back when I would buzz bait the ships in my tin boat and it was the early 80's so I used a Poloroid Camera. So the pics are much less than good.
But on another note I will be now adding the fish count to my posts. Capt Mike Snakehead Count 5 in 2009

Mike - Looks like you've found the toothy ones this year. We had 4 brought to the scales last weekend and a big one, 8lbs, being killed on the water and left for the turtles. I've only caught one this year but I've had a few break offs on my hooksets recently....
Got to check the tide schedule and get back out on the river. |
