Big baits (6" and up) I use 5:2:1, for everything else 6:4:1.

Don't get hung up on technicalities bama - use what you have! If all you have is a flippin' stick with a high speed gear ratio reel - try them anyway!

I like a 6.3:1 for all my paddle tails and the small 4-6" swimbaits. I don't fish anything bigger than that.

All of my swimbait rods are paired with a Cardiff 300. I cant remember off the top od my head what the gear ratio is. Its slower than say the Curado. It was reasonably priced and for me fits my needs. I like to work my swimbaits slow. I try to think of my swimbaits as dumb fish just waiting to be eaten.

I have its lefty counterpart, but I don't throw swimbaits yet. The gear ratio is 5.8:1 and it recovers 24" IPR. Makes for a good crank reel too.

I just use the 6.4:1 reel and it works fine. You want to work'em slow anyway, so I don't see any need for a higher ratio reel.

I use a 6.4:1 as well. I don't throw the really big baits around here, mostly the King Shad and Baby King Shad, as well as the smaller Tru-Tungsten Baits.

I use a Curado 300D with a 6:2.1 and a Cardiff 300A with a 5:2.1 ratio.

Well, it depends on the type of swimbait. The King Shad and Baby King Shad have a bill on them, so they dive down, much like a crankbait. I use these baits most of the time very quickly to draw a reaction strike. But the Tru Tungsten swimbaits do not have the bill on them and most of the time you have to reel them slower to get them from blowing out on the surface.

I use a calcutta 400 with a 5:1 ratio and this time of year I slow that retrieve down.

I think the retrieve should change from season to season.

Matt shows a slow retrieve in the winter here

Same here. I also use a round high capacity reel for big baits and "standard" low profile for smaller baits.

I fish a lot of different swimbaits of all sizes. I use the Amb 5500 & 6500. You do not need a fast retreive for swimbaits and they are usually better when fished slow and these reels cast great and have the line capacity needed for the swimbaits. The best part is the price of these reels and they are quality reels in every respect. I have the high priced Shimano's, but I find myself using the Amb 20 to 1 over the others. I just bought a very expensive custom rod and been asking what high priced reel I should put on it. I have been thinking and I am going to use the Amb 5500.
