Prespawn I like getting it caught down in the grass slightly and then ripping it free for a reaction strike. In the summer I occassionally use it as a search bait up on the flats while cranking it as fast as I can. In fall I'll use the technique you employ (yo-yo'ing) the bait but much more dramatically to represent a dying shad or other baitfish. Letting it sink all the way to the bottom and then violently ripping the bait off the bottom while picking up the slack. Works great back in the creeks.

Here in Texas the technique WI uses of ripping it free from the grass is a great way to catch bass in the spring. (Welcome to the forum, WI!) The interesting part is it works best with a red liplesss bait. That's why they call red baits "Texas Red".

There never is a bad time to throw one. I like throwing them in heavy wind. First, they are easy to throw, and second, pulling them parallel to the bank the wind is blowing into can be deadly-I really like this along riprap. Just regulate the speed depending on the water temp-colder water fish it slower, BUT: Giving it a rip even when it is cold can pay off.

What Reb says is very true. I think I catch as many bass with a trap in sub 50 degree water as I do in the summer..I have had great sucess with a modified method of what he discribed.Allow the bait to slow enough that it just tips the grass then speed it up.This also work if it just tips the bottom.A lot of times in the late summer early fall bass will push bait up on a almost void bottom like sand, clay or shell and force them to the surface. They will then blast the school and go down to catch the wounded that fall to the bottom. This method works great when they are doing that.Another method is to cast to the base of a lay down tree. Burn the bait shallow down the middle of the laydown and then kill the bait allowing it to spiral down at the end of the tree. Be in hook setting position. They will follow the bait and kill it when it falls in thier face. There is really not a wrong way to fish the bait. Experiment until the fish tell you what they want.Fish2win

Thanks for the welcome Rebasser. Was previously known as IMhooked before the site was updated! Somehow they didn't recognize my SN anymore.

In the northern waters red works as well, but Chartreuse with black back in stained water (prespawn) as well as chrome with blue back in clear water (fall) are wonderful. Again, crank your butt off. I use a 7 ft. graphite/glass composite medium action to cushion the blow because when your reeling like crazy and they want it, they crush it. Don't want hooks ripping out!

Can you say LV. No more traps in my box. The LV series blows the ratt-l -trap, the rapala, the strike king etc... away. Save some money and get an LV series bait. You will be glad that you did. The American Shad is a good color, but they also have ghost, crawfish and a load of other colors. Take my word, they are awesome baits.

Regardless if its a trap brand or others mentioned, I prefer the cordel spot rattle trap in rayburn red, and like the others mentioned my technique is to find a weed line and run the lure over the tops, and then stop reeling for a few seconds to let the bait fall, then rip it up over the tops again, varing speed till one hits it, then repeat .

If your not getting p!ssed off from the bait constantly snagging grass as your retrieving it ,your probably not going to catch too many fish. Its a love hate relationship, I love to catch fish on them, but hate the trouble of fishing them where your going to catch them. The other thing is to cast near structure let it fall to the bottom and rip it off bottom and let it fall back to the bottom pausing between rips.P N J

Bassnman or whoever

Ok you gotta clue me into why the LV is so much better than the trap or the spot. I been fishing these since they invented the wheel so its gonna take some convincing to get me to pay $10 or more for a bait I aint neveh used.

Hands down the best rattle trap I have ever used is the Cotton Cordell minnow spots.I have got 3 of them left, can't find them any where to buy. They quit making them except for the mini size minnow spots. If you have any, I sure would like to buy them from you.P N J

I'd rank the spots first, then bill lewis's ratLtrap, and then rapalas version.
For some reason the rapalas just dont do me any good in the lipless lures,
However the rest of thier line is top notch..every angler should have a #5 and #7 shad rap with the blueish back..along with all the other fine colors
