Default JackL, Cajun, Whoever....Help

Went out Sat & tried to start my 9.9 Merc. The pull cord wouldn't pull, although I could pull it out gradually, but not enough to start the engine. I don't think it's seized, but it could be, after I towed a guy last week. When I pull out the cord I can see one of those circular clips with teeth around the inside circumference with the rope through it. Looks like the kind you would work up on a thread to hold something in place. It had to dislodge from something.
Before I take off the cowl & start monkeying with it, has anyone got any tips or should I take it right to the repair shop? I know I have to disconnect the plug wires first.
Thanx in advance, guys.

I don't know. Maybe my good friend Father Luigi Panzini could fry up some calzone while you wait. Have you heard about the time he invented the salt scent and caught every calzone in the po river (sound familiar ;D)

JOE,

Pull the spark plug and take the cowl off the motor. Grasp the pully and see if you can turn it over freely. If not, it sounds like it may be something internal and needs to go to a repair shop.
I do not understand what you are talking about with the pull rope and something with teeth. If it is something in the recoil starter, you should be able to see it as soon as you get the cowl off.

Jack & Zook
I'm going to pull the cowl tomorrow night & take a look. The piece I was talking about is something like a lock washer only it has teeth which would be snugged up on the thread. I'll know when the cowl is off. If it looks too complicated, off to thr shop she goes. Thanx for the input.

As for you, Master flbm, Father Luigi is Father Guido's younger brother & he didn't invent salt scent, he invented salt flavor. Also, he didn't catch the calzones in the Po, it was in the Arno.
