Default Mariner 60hp needs throttle to start

I have a 1994 Mariner 60 hp 3 cylinder auto-mix, runs great, but will only start if I disengage gearshift and give it some gas. Choke (electric, "push key in" type) doesn't seem to help. It doesn't matter whether it's cold or warmed up. Once it starts I can drop it back to idle speed and it idles and runs great. I have the Clymer manual, but I haven't been able to find an answer there. Is this something I could adjust/fix? Not a big deal, just a minor hassle with an otherwise great motor. Thanks.

Choke is not working propperly. When pushing in the key do you hear a "click" at the motor??

Yes, I hear a "click" when I push key in. Been reading around on different forums, should I be pushing the key in for a few seconds BEFORE I try to start it? I've just been pushing it in AS I've been turning the key? Thanks.

I dont recall right now if the 94 model has the choke enrichner valve or not. Try this and get back to us. Turn the key to the run position.......push it in and hold for a count of 5 or so....then try to crank while still pushing the key in. If it fires up and runs ok it does have the enrichner valve.

Thanks. That seems to help. Not every time, but much better than before. I thought the choke would just change the fuel/air mix as you crank the motor, but apparently it provides extra fuel before you crank it (too?). Thanks again.
