Jig skirts

I've been fishing with a guy for the last couple weeks who is a self proclaimed jig king. He trims all is shirts at the hook bend so they flair out now i know this is a good but when is it not because i do not trim mine and i semed to catch more than him. So my question is when should you trim and when should u not?

I've never seen a crawfish, and I caught many as a kid playing in the creek behind my house, that looked like a sea urchin. So I don't understand why guys think that having the skirt flair will make a bass eat it better than one that doesn't. Anyone have an idea?

I trim mine at the bend of the hook but maybe not for the same reason others do. I like how it makes my trailer more visible. Plus it takes away some of the bulk look of the jig making it a bit more natural looking. Just my opinion.

3D, my guess is that the flare triggers an attack reflex. It's not that it's mimicking what a real crawfish does, it's just a subtle movement of a possible prey item that triggers an instinctive response.

I have been trying live rubber skirts, and i find that trimming them works well, but the skirts flow better than stiff silicone ones.

There are instances where I trim my skirts or leave them long. Early season I leave them long, that way they don't flare our as wide giving it a smaller profile in cooler water. I strim stirks in muddy water so they flare out. That bigger wider profile will make it easier for a bass to see it. The shorter you make the skirt the more it will flare out. You can even do the same thing with spinnerbaits. When you stop reeling and let the bait fall, they skirt will flair out instead of laying flat. Good fishing
