Post The Original Fishing Snake

Hi,

Has anyone ever used Doug Hannon's Original Fishing Snake? If so, what's your opinion on it and, is it worth the hefty price tag? It looks like a great topwater lure judging by the action on the videos on his website ( www.fishingprofessor.com ) but, I would like some non-biased opinions before I spend $40 on something that might turn out to be a piece of junk.

Thanks,
-Eric

P.S. Here is a link to a few of his fishing tips, tricks, and Technique videos on YouTube. I found them quite informative, especially to people new to bass fishing.

Those are $40 each??

Don't spend 40 bones on that thing. If you are looking for some good topwater action, your money will be better spent on some Ricos, Ito 110 and Lucky Craft Sammy. Those are proven, quality, fishing catching top water baits that will work anywhere.

Crap, you can make your own. Get a big trick worm and attach half a foam ear plug to the front of it and work it topwater, you dont even need the plug if you hold your rod tip straight up. they are a big gimmick.

if you want topwater then use use a horny toad (3.49 for 5) or jitter pop (2.99 for one) but those things aren't worth 40 bucks

case plastics has snakes too. far less than the doug hannon model.
charlies' snake works too. more money for a lure is not necessarily the
best value. while at it, try charles' jacks worm and wacky worm. you
cant go wrong. and no, charlies does not pay me. just a testimonial
to the good products he has.

Well, there not $40 each. They come with a whole bunch of crap that I might not ever use. Here is a complete list:

For $39. 95 + S&H

You get:
9 Original Fishing Snakes™
3 Black Moccasin Snakes
3 Brown Rat Snakes
3 White Albino Snakes
+ 9 BONUS Snakes! (2 white, 2 black, 2 brown) (Edit: how they get 9 out of that, I'm not sure. )
4 Custom Longshank VMC Snake Hooks

You also get : 1 CD with Tips, Techniques, Secrets by Doug Hannon plus 10 3-D, 4-color topo maps of major US Lakes w/downloadable GPS coords (Castaic, Lake Fork, Toledo Bend, Lake Rend, Shelbyville, Shasta, Truman, Table Rock, Lanier, and Sinclair) Doug's #1 Best Seller 275 page 4 color Book in PDF format Big Bass Magic!

( found at: http://www.bassprofessor.com/elite/o...shingsnake.php )

Frankly, If I can find something similar and a lot cheaper I'm goin' with that instead. Plus, I've never heard, let alone, been to any of those lakes.

A Zoom lizard head welded to a 7 inch Culprit worm works great for swimming across the tops of submerged bush and trees. A candle flame will weld them together nicely, also a pencil soldering iron.....under 5 bucks at Wall Mart automotive. Good fishing, Mac

Don't spend the $40.........it's not needed in order to catch the "bigguns" . . . . . invest any extra "fishin'" money you have into top-notch, high quality rods and reels. You'll get muc hbetter bang fo ryour buck

Hannon's snakes may work as well as advertised, but I don't like buying lure kits. It seems to be the only way "gimmick" lures are sold, and we all know the vast majority of those are garbage.

Unhappy snakes

My friend bought them, he put them in a box with other plastics and they melted! So he had $40 worth of trash, never even got to fish them.

Try the Tiki Anaconda. Found them for only $2 in the discount bin. Big bait, used a big hook, and caught a nice bass. You get 3 per bag.

I have Doug's snakes. The snakes are very heavy yet float very nicely on the water. The main problem I had with them was it was difficult to cast accurately since they were so heavy. They need to be kept cool or else they will melt very easily. I have already had a white snake and a brown snake ruined. I keep them in ziploc bags and in the cooler of ice with the snacks and drinks until I am ready to use them.

You went back a ways to find this thread....what are you looking for specifically? Hannon's snake or the Tiki? Check to see what's for sale on the other threads or post what you're looking for.

I bought them and actually liked them a lot. I fish a lot of snakes and the action on these is better than just about any other I have seen. That being said, the action on them is really only a benefit in open water. You can get the same reactionary bite under the trees or off the shore with just about any snake.
Because of their weight, I wouldn't throw them on anything but a 7' stiff rod.
At $40 for 18 snakes they come out to just over $2 each. I agree that they can not be left in the heat, but that goes with just about any plastics.

I have a white one I could send ya, send me a P.M. with the details.

*be warned, unless you have a spinning rig, you wont be casting the elastic bastards far or accurate at all.

I will definitely agree with that statement. Don't even think about putting one on your baitcaster unless you have practiced throwing a 3 oz lure.

The weight doesnt really seem to be the problem to me. When I cast them you cant ever get them to "load" on the rod worth a damn. They are made out of that stretchy sticky material you find in the kids toys at the 50 cent turnstile machines in the grocery stores. When you load the rod you can actually feel the snake stretch on the cast absorbing all your casting energy.

I should probably also say, that I really like the damn snakes. The action on them is great and I've even caught a fish on them (allways a plus for any fishing system ). Just the problems with the casting well makes me want to throw a frog instead.

*edited to add
I will say they float like no ones buisness, and if your looking for a carolina rigable 12 inch floating soft plastic then they would probably work very well for that. I just cant ever remember to get them outta lowriders spare fridge when we go fishing.

I think I will give them another try once I go out on the boat again. Because I can't cast them very accurately I am limited to open areas. Just for that reason I am less inclined to use them, since I prefer to pitch or cast under tree branches or in tighter spots.
