Default New boat project (part II)

I'll call this part 2 since I already tried it earlier in the year and the 1964 Evinrude, well it didn't work out.

Today, I bought a 1986 Johnson 28 horse outboard cheap to go on my boat. It cranks up right quickly and runs very well at all RPMs. I will have to research converting it from long shaft to short shaft. Also while I'm at it I'm sure a new impeller would be good. Gonna keep posting pics cause I'm a loud jerk who likes to see himself write. And also, althought it aint much to look at now, it will be the prettiest boat at the ramp soon enough... How many 14 foot boats do you see with decks, bow moutn TM and a console? Gonna try and make it as fast as possible too, hoping for 40 mph but that may be optimistic.

Zook, the other boat with a 25 can do 33 mph for a fact. Right now this one is lighter.

I have converted a long shaft to a short shaft before...it's easy if you can find a good machinist.

Right here!

14 feet, MotorGuide Wireless bow mount trolling motor, new depthfinder, carpeted casting deck, lights front/back, underdeck storage, hand-painted trailer, nee trailer lights, new tires.

Haha... Just messin' with ya. Hope your boat comes out well.

No, he never emailed me back. I actually found this at the local marina for $250. WHen I called, the girl working the desk said they only dealt new motors, but I happened to stop by later in the week and asked the boss and he said "well hell, I have a used 28 thats been sitting over there for a couple years". Lo and behold, leaning in the corner was the motor.

Sometimes you gotta get out there and talk to folks in person.

So I finished the jack plate/elevated transom today. It looks pretty silly if you ask me how high this motor is now raised, but I might get used to it. If it gets me on the water this year it'l be great. This way I don't have to worry about converting it or selling it and look for a short shaft till next winter.

This jackplate has effectivly raised the engine 6 3/4" and set the engine back 6 inches.

and by the way... that motor looks like new, real clean. most "used" motors are kinda scratched up and all. looks like new.

Gosh no that tiller handle is DANGEROUS! Haha, I had to try it out one day, the steering cable hasn't arrived in the mail yet, so I took an extension handle of a TM and rigged it to the cowl. Its being held on by plastic.

The motor looks better in the pics than in person. I'm gonna replace the Johnson decals with the new Evinrude Flag decals. I always wanted an Evinrude.

=Nice work there WTL. Not only did you save the hassle of finding the parts needed to change over the long to the short but also saved some money doing it. Also I might add that the needed parts you would have to have found are fairly hard to come by. You also actually increased the usuable length of the boat by setting back and of course you will have a boat and motor combo that will in fact run very well and should be a fairly quick for its size combo. It will not acheive 40 though. Its physically impossible due to all factors.

I gotta replace a bearing buddy actually, so thats gonna get done before it goes to the lake. I will need to replace the rims and tires and get a spare eventually, too much rust on those rims for my liking.

Sure will give you a weeks notice. My schedules a bit up in the air right now, so I'm not sure when, probably after the spawn though hopefully not yet to rat season. Like I said though if I don't make it up there I'll get you a ticket to a garbage game down here this septmeber and we can just hit the warrior or something.

Damn cable came in the mail today. Its a foot too short. Even the jack plate could have made a difference. Gonna see if I can move the console back since its not even been built yet.

Edit:

I think I can work with this, but the rack is not going to be level - its gonna be tilted andyawing inward (the helm should be straight if I do it like this though). I don't think that will make a difference, but I wont know until I get the helm in the mail as the cable was apparently not universal enough for the helm I got at the junkyard.

OK, things are starting to come together. I have moved the console as far back as possible and settled for now on it being a center console for the purpose of symetry and weight distribution.

Moving myself this far back means I needed a little more weight in the front so I extended the deck and am adding a hatch for the deep cycle battery, a small coke cooler, garbage and a misc place for stuff that I just may need at my fingertips.

The livewell will be placed directly in front of the console, which yes, is being fashioned out of the case of an old tower. The seating for the second man, which I have thought hard about, will be a removable bench that will be located just in fron of the livewell. I hate bench seats and since its my boat and I normally fish alone, it normally wont be in there, but I'm gonna make it anyways so that it hooks on to a few nuts at the gunwhale.

Pictures time....

That's starting to come along very well, Will! Is that trolling motor mount a MinnKota Wireless, (Terrova), or a gator-type mount?
