Ledge Fishing

Who are the experts on ledge fishing?? What info can you give fella that is new at it. Any help will be appreicated.

by "ledge" what are you meaning? seawalls, bank drop offs, reeds,??

i like to use a jig or a brush hog or lizard when dropping to ledges. fish it like you normally would a soft plastic, feeling the bottom but when the line becomes to tight, let it fall back to the next ledge and work the bottom. also work the ledge both directions, out from the back and back up the ledges. also try to pinpoint what ledges you want to hit. it could go from 8' to 15' on one ledge but they might be holding on the next deeper ledge. this is what worked for me at nolin.

by ledge I mean dropoffs that are in the middle of the lake. Usually around creek channels or the river channel. It seems to be where the bass like to go "hang out" during the summer months on the lake.

The lake that I mean is Kentucky lake.

What Zooker said. A C-rig will not only allow you to fish deep but will also let you cover a lot of water. A PnJ is also a good choice for stair stepping up and down. Another bait is a heavy spinnerbait-I mean 3/4 to 1 oz. It is heavy enough to stay in the strike zone and fish that deep don't see a spinnerbait very often.

Everything the other guys said, but also, if the top of the ledge is 15' or shallower, try crankbaits. A reaction strike often occurs as the crank bumps along, then suddenly clears the edge of the ledge. This is often what i use instead of the C-Rig on the steepest slopes, especially when there are active baitfish holding on the creeks.

Everett,

My brother and I fished Kentucky Lake in a good size tournament (100+ teams) in May, 05. We caught some real nice bass on humps that dropped from 16'-28'. We slayed them on a 4" tube (green pumpkin with orange) with a 1/4 jig head. Also I would recommend a 10" worm on a c-rig. Jigs are good too as well as deep diving crankbaits. We had a consistant bite of all three species of bass on the tubes though. I love that lake and hope to get to fish again some day! Good luck!

BTW... Here's a smallmouth my brother caught on a crankbait while we were practicing at KY Lake.

I would add that trying different weights to obtain different rates of fall may help. If a bass is waiting in ambush too fast a fall rate may not trigger a strike.

I was fishing a ledge from a bank yesterday. There is a drop off from the bank, a small area that sticks out that is about a foot long, and another drop. I fished a c-rig. I was fishing in and out of some rain, and I caught 7 on it, and 8 if you count the fish explained here: http://www.bassfishin.com/bassfishin...ad.php?t=12290

I caught a lot of them on a 1/8th ounce weight and when I lost that weight, I caught a few more on the next size or two up. I almost didn't try this, but I am glad I did. After reading what these guys wrote, I was doing the right thing.

I'm not 100% sure if natebosox already said this but I like to fish them "inside out". Meaning I put the boat in the more shallow area and cast into the deep. I believe that it keeps whatever bait you use near the in the strike zone longer. It's hard to explain without a diagram, but it helps with how much line you have out compared to the depth.
