Learned a lesson tonight
Hit the lake with a buddy of mine tonight. I recently bought some Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap hooks for wacky rigging. These hooks remind me of circle hooks, so when I got hits I just started reeling. Big mistake. I missed 2 good fish becuse I didn't set the hook. Won't make that mistake again ;D

Re: Learned a lesson tonight
Circle hooks are designed so that you don't have to use an eye-crossing hookset to hook the fish. The way they are shaped causes them to fairly reliably wind up in the corner of a fishes mouth. Just a little pressure sets the hook.

I always figure it doesn't cost anything to set the hook when you're not sure if the fish is there or not..many times it pays big dividends..next time you'll be ready to "cross her eyes" 8)

Re: Learned a lesson tonight
That was my problem, Nitro-I wasn't using a circle hook but was fishing it like I was using one.
You got that right, JB! |

unfotunatly they don't work so well in a catfishes mouth, they tend to end up near the tounge/throat. I know we aren't fishing for cats, but when using live baits, its what you end up with sometimes. |

Re: Learned a lesson tonight
Just learned something else-I checked the hook, and it wasn't quite sharp enough. I made the assumption it was. Won't do that again either ;D.
