Interesting aticle in the most recent BASS Times on fizzing-it said to go down the throat rather than the traditional through the side method, that the swim bladder will be right there at the base of the throat and you only need to go in about 1/8th of an inch to get it to reduce the pressure. What was most important was to submerge the fish while the needle is still inserted and look for bubbles coming out and DO NOT SQUEEZE THE FISH.

I like that method a whole lot more than blindly poking a needle into the fish's side.

So far I have never had to do this but nice to know how if I need to.

Jolly-Please Release Me is some chemicals you add to the live well to help protect the fish. I got mine at Academy. Seems to work real well.

I don't have a needle in the boat and probably won't get one-O don't fish deep enough water.

Lizards
Lizards, I am selling the new and improved basket version I made.It takes a while to build one, gotta do quite a bit of tig welding on stainless steel rods, I am building a program to cut a different version out on a laser. I have carried and still carry needles in my tackle pack for about 15 years. The basket is a safer process for the fish, its rather easy to kill a fish while trying to save its life.Needles rust, so make sure you get new one at least every 2 years.I use a 18 guage syringe needle. Crazyfish is right, depth really doesn't matter, its the speed in which you haul them to the boat.I catch smallmouth in 90-105 ft of water , if they come up up slow, they can be released even from those depths, its when you set the hook and those smallmouth rocket to the surface on you. They actually lock themselves up the majority of the time. You can either needle them, or lower them back to the depth where their airbladder got locked up at and the bladder will unlock.I have designed a stainless steel basket that holds the fish as you lower the basket and reach the depth the fish needs to unlock the bladder, he can swim away, or you can keep him locked in and slowly bring him back up to the boat and take a picture of him and release him on the surface. The basket is foolproof. The needle process will cause a fish to die every once in a while due to human error. P N J

Default Fizzing Procedure

There is a very good article in Nov BASS Times on when you should fizz and how. They also state it is better to insert through the mouth rather than in the side of the fish. This edition isn't opnline yet, but should be soon if you don't get a copy. Here is the link to the past issues where Nov should be posted soon:
