I would buy one from Wal-Mart for $40, they are just as good or even better than the $400 dollar rods that everyone here over pays for.

Yeah, not really. If you are a beginner, then they're fine. But if you are in to it enough to pat $500, then go for it! You will get sensitivity, durability, warrenties, and lighter weight in the rod, and smoothness, toughness, better drag, better castability, and longer lifetime in the reel. Every dollar that you spend goes right towards quality in high-end fishing equipment.

Seriously, I feel like I have been mislead by some of the members on here that told me that I should save my money and buy wal-mart combos because they were just as good as anything out there.

Thanks again

Nah you were right.

The difference in quality between say Dobyns rods and Ugly sticks are marginal at best honestly. Dobyn rods have a better quality cork thats all, the cork they use is premium French truffle cork. Yes its true they actually make the cork out of truffles, thats why they have to charge so much. With just regular cork their rods would be ~$35, because their blanks, guides and reel seats just completly suck.

I think Gary Dobyns should just quit while hes ahead. Hes already con'd enough people into buying his sorry excuses for a fishing rods. Their straight pieces of chinese trash!

Truffle Cork, interesting and imaginative, I'm impressed.

What Bama said. Handle a few and see which one feels right to YOU. That said I truly believe any recommendations you get from the guys here you can take to the bank as good advice.

I agree with both these statements. Yes you could only use just a spinning reel. I used to only use spinning reels and questioned why the hype…..until I really got one and used it. then I had a bunch of dusty spinning reels laying around. Being in Florida and fishing for snook and redfish has brought me back to my spinning reels loved skipping under mangroves! But that’s not to say you can’t skip with a baitcaster ….have seen it done and some are awesome at it. But Florida just made me realize time and a place for both….got me calling my spinning reels baby and sweetheart again! that being said I think money really comes into play. I’m a reel guy so most of my money went into reels….still couldn’t afford the $200 and up reels but did find that there are things you can do to make a reel better and smoother. All my rods were the cheap Berkley cherrywoods but I got so in tune with them I really loved em and felt I was really in sync with that rod. Spinning reel I have mostly Pflueger Presidents…but the Shimano Sonora and Sedona are two great low priced reels! You have to go feel the rod and reel for yourself…..that’s going to be the best for you
