Bass will almost always relate to something whether its cover or changes in structure. Try looking for dropoffs, ridges, even small indentions on the bottom. This isn't exactly a big bass tip it's an all bass tip.

That pond you fish might not be too old.It was probably stocked about 3 years ago if they started he bass off as minnows. But if the pond is OLD then what ide do is put some goggles on and jump in.See where the bass are holding.

i think it was stocked about 10yrs ago. i may go ahead and take a swim to see where they are. iv done it once already but the water was too murky. i couldnt see 2ft in front of me.

I've noticed some ponds I fished in the past; have nothing but small fish. It's very rare to catch a large fish. I found that the pond was very old, and what has happended is the fish stunt themselves out. With out proper forage for the bass, they just stay small.

that would explain quite a bit. most of the fish i catch out of there are about 2lbs. iv only caought a coupple of 3lbs+ fish outta there. iv been going to the same pond for the whole summer just about 3times a week. i only do catch and release.

The thing about big bass is that they like to get into the nastiest places for us. The nastier it is to get a lure in there, the more likely a big fish is there.

all the hawgs moved to lake fork......the best way to get them is night fishing.last night i nailed 5 on a black jig in about 10 casts to a dam.all between 2 and 4 lbs.not huge, but i had to get out of the water(storm coming),and i'm positive i coulda hung some big ones if i had more time.definitely night fishing.
this time of year anyway..

get one of the smartcast depthfinders so you can see the topography of the lake.

I didn't see Indiana anywhere, Die_Hard _Fisher are you from Indiana, and if so, where. I also live in the Hoosier state, perhaps I can point you to a few lakes, there are actually starting to get several Hoosiers on this site.

By Laporte I assume? Do you have access to a boat? And are you old enough to drive? Just trying to find out what resources you have. First off, IL bassin was correct IMO, bass will relate to either structure or cover in one form or another. Small ponds can be great or horrible depending on the conditions, and how much pressure they get. I'm not familiar with the nothern end of the state, I fish Indianapolis area, west of Indianapolis and usually the southern to SW part of the state. Looking at the map you have Koontz Lake close by, and Lake of the woods, plus of course Lake Michigan isn't too far either. The biggest thing about some bigger lakes, is you have a bigger variety of water conditions from one end to the other, so when you can move to the places they are biting you can obviously be more successful. I would try to get to a bigger lake peridically just for the experience it gives you, and the chances are a lot less to get skunked IMO. If you don't have access to a boat it's tough to try bigger lakes, but if you keep at it, and talk with the locals, you will get the hang of where and when to fish what parts. I know this probably hasn't helped much, but you're a long way away from where I usually fish. If you ever want to come down south, let me know and we'll go out.

It happens because the bass population is to big for the pond and theres not enough forage are room for them to grow any bigger. A fish can only grow to a certain size depending on how much space and food he has!!!
