Default Cold water pig pickin'?

For what it's worth, I've had a lot of luck this winter with the fish (pure luck). Not many big ones, but enough hook ups that it was worth braving the temperatures. I didn't think I'd be able to catch anything in 39 deg. water. What's the coldest water ya'll have pulled a green-backed water toad from?

Around 50, but it doesn't get much colder than that in South Texas.

I've caught them with some ice still on the pond. That particular day I was slow rolling a spinnerbait in a deep creek channel. Caught one 4 lbs. Slayed some BIG Crappies that day too!

December 9th '07, in Waukegan, IL on a small pond that should have been frozen I caught four dinks and a 2 lb. largemouth with the most beautiful markings I've ever seen. I had one of those drop in temp gauges that read 37 degrees, but that stupid thing was never very accurate.

I get them through the ice. From the boat I've got nice bass in 36 degree water.I wish the water would stay at 38 degrees all year long.

Definitely, Tom! 38-80 water year-round would be prime pickin'!

Getting to the point, probably through the ice or 40* with a small spoon.

Yes, yes it does.

Infact Whent he perch bite slwos down, we get out some Northland Buckshot Jigs and catch some bass. Saw a huge one (for around here) on the unerwater camera, so I dropped the jig down there right in front of his face. He inhaled it and took off. Tangled up in our other lines, then the camera, then he broke off with the last of the Jigs. That was Saturday afternoon. We went and got more, but didn't fish long today because the wind made it frigid.

Thanks for the feedback on the tundra hawgs. After braving the water when the air temp. was 20 something this winter, I have a definite respect for the Northern Fishermen. May you all have ice out soon so you can get rid of that cabin fever.

01/02/2006, water temp was 39, air temp was 60 degrees. The only year to my recollection the particular lake didn't freeze it was such a mild winter. Caught two 4's and a 5 on a DT10 crankin' as slow as possible. Just fast enough to keep the bait down and bumping the bottom. Caught a 9lb+ on a custom painted rouge. It would sink about a foot every 20 seconds had it down about 7 or 8 ft. right off the bottom, waited 20 seconds and twitched once, and she ate it. The best day I've ever had in terms of weight on 4 fish.

Nice fish, Basstech. I guess it's true that some of the biggest bass are gonna be caught out of cold water.
