Default Popper techniques

When fishing at night with Poppers do you twitch them to make small ripples in the water like an injured minnow or do you jerk them to make the popping sound and big splash?

What's the best way to work them?

I don't pop them too hard. My main cadence has always been cast towards structure, wait 2 seconds, Pop, 2 seconds, double pop (softer), 2 seconds, Pop, 2 seconds, reel in and cast to the next spot. Of course sometimes you will find that they want it worked another way, but thats normally what I start with.

I go for the pop sound and wait a good 30 to 40 seconds between twitches. you can do a slow retrieve and wait too theres no one said way to fish these baits.

This Bill dance I love the most! got me the one below. it looks like a bass jumping at flys.

The best way to work them is the way the fish want them at the time. Sometimes fast with little twitches, sometimes slow with real hard pops. It just depends on what the fish want.

Cast, when it hits the water pop twice, fairly hard. Wait 20 seconds, crank three times and pop. Bring it in this way, but only wait ten seconds after the first time. There are definietly other rthyms to be used, but this is my favorite/go to.

i used to throw and pop it and wait, then i got taught by 'the master' of pop r s down here, and he showed me a steady splish splash of pops and walking the dog movements with the pop r, and it really gets results..when I first joined this forum all I talked about was the popR, but for some reason the last couple of years the fish are hitting the buzzbait and spook more than the popR, so I gotta go with whats working for me..but the popR will always be one of my favs ..due to the amount of good memories of catching fish in tournaments on them, esp the translucent ones I use on the ohio river creeks.

I have that Bill Dance lure and have never done good with it. I'll try fishing it more how described in this thread. The only top water I do good with is a Smithwick Ratlin Rogue in a gold color and Spro frogs in any color.

well, i usually bring my mp3 with me when fishing in the morning... I just cast, kick back, and wait till the ripples are gone... Then i just sit there and randomly give it a twitch when i feel like it... I don't think there is any rigt or wrong way... I figure if the lure is in the water you can catch bass, even if it is just sitting still.

Try this technique I learned fishing with a guy in the BFL. Tie a second popper to the rear o-ring on the first popper with a distance of about 6" apart. Pretty kewl how they both move simultaneously. If the fish misses the first one, he might hit the second one. I think Reb's response was the best. What do the fish want "THAT" day.

It matters what the fish want at a particular time. They may be looking for a fast hard pop, or a slow light splash. Their feeding habits change all the time, just try different presentations and fins what they want.

cranky,
one thing about listening to iPod during fishing, many times you'll miss hearing a fish chasing and hitting a bait fish some where near you on the pond, many times when you hear a bass jumping and feeding , thats your cue to cast over there and search for active bass.

plus yer missin the crickets chirpin, the birds singin' and mother nature.

true... Didn't even know you could hear the bass... I usually see splashes, but never catch. most are this weird fruit falling into the water
