Default My new dredging tool

After my brother lost his brand new casting combo overboard last week I decided I'd make a dredging tool for such emergencies. This is what I came up with. It consists of a solid steel ring with three 12 inch chains attached. The chains are seperated by lead wraps I cut from decoy strip weights and wrapped tightly to the ring. This seperates the chains and also adds needed weight to help keep the rig on the bottom of the lake for good dredging contact. Each chain has two large 5/0 trebel hooks. I've snipped the sharp tips off and used a brush wheel to smooth them dull. The rig will be attached to a 3/16" rope tied dirrectly to the ring between the two wraps of electrical tape to keep the rope centered. So far I like it but any suggestions to improve it would be welcome. I was thinking of maybe adding shrink tubing onto the chains between the hooks to help keep the chains from tangling. But I'm affraid that also might make the length of chains less flexable than it should be. Anyways, I thought I woould show you guys what I came up with and see what you think. And maybe you would like to make one for yourself.

I love IT KEITH. I WOULD TRY IT AND THEN IF IT DOESN'T WORK, ADD MORE HOOKS MAYBE? maybe a spreader bar to cover more ground?

instead of shrink tube just get the clear tubeing from home depot the stuff they use for ponds . other than that it should work real fine just do not tie it to boat that thing loks strong enough to sink it if you got it hung on big object. good luck on finding rod. maybe you could also attach magnets that might help. and remember NO BODIES

That should work, if you can keep it from getting hung up on anything solid. There is very little steel in any modern reels, a magnet probably would not do any good. I think a single, large trebble with a heavy weight might work as good as anything. You could use heavy cord, like trot line size cord, and then double it. That way if it got snaged, you could drop one side and pull all the cord back up. You just need to snag the line and if you get that up, the rest should follow. If you do find it, it will need a complete tear down to clean it up and prevent corrosion. If I am not open at the time, Tony could do it for ya.

HAHAHAHA!

I like this idea a lot Keith. What about adding tubing to the chains but instead of using a solid piece of tubing using short pieces and maybe leaving a link or two of chain between pieces of tube so the chain can still hinge and flex?

hahaha, Well Kevin, there is a car down there somewhere. lol And I did find a submerged boat a couple years ago. Who knows whats down there. I thought about a single weighted hook, but then I thought it may not be a rod next time. It could be a set of keys or a pair of glasses. Something smaller. So I thought something like this would be more usefull than a single weighted hook. I guess I'll find out. Hopefully I'll never use it again if I find my brothers rod.

Keith, if you threw that thing in the water here in MN, they would probably bust ya for some sort of illegal fishing!

If your going to carry that thing place it in its own lil box otherwise will catch everything else around it.
As for Hoffa his resting spot is safe surrounded by concrete.
Figure it will work also think after a few uses ill snag something solid like a stump, use light wire hooks then can get it back.Points arnt actually needed could grind off.
Ive fished several up that wernt mine, most not in good shape used one for several years however.
I used a fence stretcher, long pipe with several u bend hooks, and a rope, weighs about 5 pds and drags nicely, but would take up more room I think.
Dont carry or didnt carry it but went and got it when needed.

Yep, I have it stored nicely in a zip up vinyl pouch I got from Sears for $2.00. The points were snipped and smoothed so they won't snag on everything they come into contact with. QUOTE]

Keith, if you are able to retrieve it, I would be glad to clean it up so your brother does not have any problems with it. Let me know.

Update, the dredging too SUCKS!!! LOL Way too much chain. I'm going to shorten the chains to about 4 inches so there isn't so much tangling going on. After using the thing, I decided there really isn't a need for such long chains. I didn't find the rod. But had so much trouble with the tool that I'm not surprised. Maybe next time after I modify it.
