Default Bass Fishing Myths

I was thinking about some bass fishing myths today and I figured I would start a thread about them.

What are some myths that you've heard over the years? They can be local, as in only on your favorite lake, or widespread. Here are some myths that some local guys around here believe.

1. Top water baits only work in summer and not in bright sunlight. I've caught some of my biggest bass in late fall on a Rapala Skitter Pop and a Skitter Prop on sunny and cloudy days.

2. Senkos have to be fished weightless. I catch as many or more bass on weighted Senkos as weightless.

3. In-line spinners like Mepps and Rooster Tails are only for trout.
A couple of my friends and I do very well with Mepps Aglias for largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Those are only a few of the many that I’ve heard over the years. I’m looking forward to hearing some of yours.

1) Bait (fill in the blank) doesn't work in my lake/area. I have seen shad baits work where there are no shad. Craws work where none exist. I think any bait is capable of catching fish. That is not to say that it is the best bait, but almost anything can work in the right circumstances.

2) You have to match the hatch. Similar to the 1st statement. I do believe that trying to look like natural prey has its purpose, but sometimes it takes something different to get bit. If so, why does morning dawn work?

Mrs. Bama catches the big fish.....

To add to the topwater myth I've caught them on the surface in 52 degree water around 11 am with blue bird sky.

I've caught fish with banana's on the boat too.

Spitting on live bait for strikes. Shimano reels and Kistler rods are no good.

Here is my pet peve myth, with a very slight exageration, but you get the point. Shimano reels were invented by God and manufactured by Jesus Christ. They never break and last forever.

That Cokes and frozen Reeses Cups are a good fish attractant.

Fish get gas with heavy pressure swings and will not bite. Coat the lure with Mylanta for attractant. It has never worked.

Allowing a RedHead on your boat is bad luck.

Wind blows the baitfish around. Bullcrap. Wind blows plankton....which is followed by the baitfish that feed on it.....which are followed by the bass that feed on them.

Fishing articles that are titled, "How to beat the post-spawn blues"....or some such nonsense. Something like that surmises that all bass spawn and then go off the beds at the same time. Totally false.

I have a few:

1) Bass become dormant in cold water.

2) Bass strike baits with red hooks because they resemble blood.

3) Modern livewells make fish care easy.

biggest myth I've found over the years,

the bass will hit on tournament day what they've been hitting

all week prefishing...
it almost always changes from day to day (location, and what they want)

Thanks for all the great reply's.

Here's another myth

You need smaller lures for smallmouth bass - Last year I caught an 8 inch smallie on a 5 inch Bomber Long A. I've caught many smallmouth that were 12 inches or smaller on lures that were 5-6 inches.

I once caught a LM while fishing a Pop-R that wasn't any longer than the lure it hit.
