Default Refurbishing Some Old Cranks.

I've been dabbling with making some of my own lures recently, as well as repainting a few old crankbaits that I thought might get some new life from a little refurbishing.....I've still got to clear coat some of them, but I thought i'd share what I was doing...Whatcha think?

Heyyy, those look great! I especially like the one at the top right. The bream colored one. That would be killer around here.

Everything is airbrushed except the red gill marks and the blue streaks on the face of the bream pattern....It seemed easier to just use a small paint brush to do that. I used a combination of automotive urethane paints and Createx waterbased paints, and I'll use an automotive clearcoat for the final finish.

I've been airbrushing since the mid 70's but i'm completely new at messing with crankbaits.....I quickly learned that the small size of the lures makes prepping them a real pain in my hands....Literally....But i'm havin fun, and hopefully my hands will get accustom to dealing with small lures before too long.....and lastly I hope they'll catch me a bass or three when I'm done....lol

You surely have a fine touch with an airbrush. Thanks for sharing as I enjoy looking at non-big boy/manufacturer lures. Which automotive clear coat do you use?

I used Duponts low end brand called Nason.....It's not as expensive as the big name brands, but its a decent quality clear.

Awesome pics and work. I used to do that more than I have in recent years. I might sit down this winter and work on a few of my oldies but goodies. Thanks for the pics.

I see what looks like wood bodies. Do you reccomend wood over plastic? Did you made the bodies also?

You do see some blank wood bodies that a friend turned on a lathe for me....They are various types of local woods, none of which are balsa, but i'm gonna paint'um up and see how they work anyway...lol. Prepping raw wood lures takes alot more work then just repainting a factory bait....beit wood or plastic....So its not quick and easy, but theres just something about catchin a bass on a lure made from scratch that I've always found appealing, so I'm dabbling with making a few of my own.

+10 on your airbrushing! looks good. That's something I would like to try.
I heard that before you start painting the wood, it's a good idea to put them in the oven, on about 200 degrees, for a couple of hours to finish drying them out so you won't get any internal wood rot after you seal them up with the finish paint/coat.
I am anxious to see some of the finished homebuilts!!
