First off, welcome to the forums! Check out the video section of the website. Kevin has excellent videos regarding jigs. My jig fishing is primarily for largemouth. I have very little smallmouth opportunity in my lakes. So I'll let the small mouth guys in here take it from here. That is...if there is anyone in here with a small mouth.

Most of the Smallmouth guys go with a Hair Jig rather than a Rubber Jig. Look into that and I also know that they usually stick with the Brown / Orange variety for the Color.

Welcome to the site.
I'm no jig expert but...I'm told that smallmouth jig fishing, smaller is better, especially if river fishing or gravel and rock bottoms. (1/4oz, 3/8oz range) Jigging for smallies on like Erie is totally different due to gobbie population and big waters but told they like to go as light as conditions will allow, lot of wind and such to deal with frequently. But there are others that are better informed on that type of water.
In moving water alot of my buddies go as simple as a round head jig and a 3in. grub, usually a single twister but some insist the double tail is better. Allows you to easily play with different colors, again sometimes important in clearer shallow moving water.
So what kind of waters you fishing? Quessing if there aren't alot of largemouth your probably fishing moving water, just quessing.

Again welcome to the site, lots to learn!
So have fun and good luck on your jigging adventure!
