Default Tap, tap, tap.....

I've got a question for everyone. When fishing and you pick up the line and feel that old familiar tap, tap, tap sensation. What are you feeling?
A) Fish sucking in the bait
B) Fish chewing on your bait
C) Fish sucking in and blowing out the bait
D) Fish swimming away with your bait and what you are actually feeling is each stroke of the tail

Think about this one..... (Could it be that what you thought all these years isn't true?)

And for all of you non-test takers, don't worry, it won't affect your G.P.A. or what college you may get into.

The tap-tap is the fish sucking in the bait. When I feel that I reel down to get rid of the slack and cross his eyes.

heres an excellent article about this subject,i learned a bit from it even
http://www.mwbt.com/basshousepart2.htm
ok,when i feel a tap, tap, tap,i make sure the bass has my worm before i set the hook, but if i feel a mushy sensation,i set it immediatly.i beleive that once a bass picks up your worm,he will either A.swallow it or B. run away with it in his mout. therefore,as long as when he tugs, you dont put to much tension on your line, you will catch him. but everyone, readthat article a couple of times and really get what the guy is saying,it WILL make you a better worm fisherman.

Well Bubba it means that ol bucket mouth has slobered on my pre rigged scupernoil jelly worm and will be bringing it back to his or her cover. I must wait for the spring keepers on my worm to pop before lift and set the hook with my Phluger single action reel metal Heddon rod and Dacron string. Wait for it .....wait for it... Now

Some of the answers could be correct, especially the bluegill ones. But for arguments sake we'll say it is a Bass. I have to say I do different things depending on what the fishing has been like for the day. If it's been pretty good(more agressive bites, more bites), then I will reel down as soon as I feel the first tap, and set the hook. So the answer to that is "A". If it's been a slower day, and not many hookups, then I will ease off of the tension, and allow the fish to hold onto it for a little longer, and then set the hook so that would be closet to "D". However if I'm fishing a PNJ, I set the hook the second I feel anything. I'm not a believer that "MOST" bass will run of hold onto a PNJ for long. So the tap tap tap, is them sucking it in, spitting it out, and tapping you on the shoulder saying HAHA missed another one IMO. But I also don't believe bass chew on anything, they gulp it down whole, they aren't a gar or toothed fish, they swallow the bait whole, however that may take a moment or 2. I also don't want to wait to long and gut hook the bass, so I never wait to long. Bass when feeding on shiners/live fish will actually catch the fish tail first, then turn it in their mouth to swallow it head first. In this instance if you have hooked the bait through the lips you must wait some time for the fish to get turned to have the hook in the proper position to hook the bass, otherwise you just pull it out, without a hookset. This is what I believe to be the facts. Not sure whoever else believes like I do, but my experiences back me up, so that's the way I believe your tap tap tap question is answered.

i always set the hook.it's just when you feel those machine gun taps you come up empty.ever seen a bunch of bluegills fight over a worm?that's what you are feeling %99.9 of the time when you get tap tap tap really fast.

I use power worms, if I wait for a third tap, I end-up with a gut hooked fish.Set the hook first, ask questions later.

I usually swear ALOT and make a mental note where I am and exactly where the bite came from so I can come back in an hour and catch him.It seems like some times , I lose focus and have the reflexes of a dead cow, then other times I can't miss ? Also I always make a habit of trying to miss the first fish of the day, then I get angry at my self and then I am just focused on fishing for the rest of the day.... Lmao....P N J

Tap, thump or tick are all common sensations used to describe the feel when a fish picks up a worm or pnj. Single or multiple sensations are often described. Question is what exactly are you feeling? So often we have been told that it's the fish sucking in and spitting out the bait. But is it true?

I've found that D is the most common. I've watched too many fish over the years suck in baits in clear water and not feel a thing but then feel the thump thump or tap tap when watching the fish swim (bass or bluegill) away with the bait. Of course when tournament fishing I don't wait long to set the hook.

PNJ - So that's you making all that ruckus!!!
