Good read. One thing though I have never caught a bass with a spinner bait on or breaking the surface of the water. Or even just under the surface. My favorite is when they hammer it when it's on the fall at the end of the cast.

Never lol what is a buzzbait, just another form of spinnerbait.Regardless of shape of blades be they round ,square, oblong at some time and point will work from surface to bottom.Try waking a bait over a nest, try running it so fast you think it cant be caught.
Surface, drop bait, wake bait, slow rolled same bait can be all.And yes fish these mostly subsurface.

Yet mostly how we catch fish is implanted in that individuals own mind, sometimes wrongly.Ive given these away in the past they just sit in their tackle box unused,so just use them myself even if it aint right using a buzzbait underwater. Why is because some days like any other bait they hammer them.

Most of mine are surface strikes, especially in lilies and reeds

I've used techniques one and two and they do work. A high speed reel is a must. I've used technique number three many times, but never have much luck dragging bottom with a spinner bait. It will work, but I've not had much success. Although I did have a huge pike follow it up to the boat from 20 foot of water once before slithering away.

I throw spinnerbaits almost exclusively at visible targets with a short rod for short accurate casts. Nothing on the fall, fish it all the way back varying retrieve, almost like a swim jig.
