You might be reeling it in too fast or too slow and your friend might be putting in pauses or jerks while you are not. Hope this helps.

Feb is usually cold up here I like using a smaller thin/flat crank in shad color. Fish it slow with a couple of pause. When the water warms up above 50s change to crawdad color and speed up a bit.

BTW at this time of the year find clearest and warmest water. Rocky banks such as rip rap is good place to throw your crank.

make sure you're making contact with the crankbait. While I HAVE had some strikes on just a wobbling crankbait, most of my strikes accured after the lure deflected off some piece of structure, be it rock, stick, or just bare bottom. At this point of the year, I'd use a steady retrieve with a red crankbait. Do it just fast enough to let the lure make contact with the bottom and crawl along. Bass haven't seen a crayfish since late fall, and it's probably been longer since they seen a crayfish imitating lure.

Lots of luck.

dark red clay banks that has the sun hitting them is best.. my guess is your not hitting struture.. i know sounds messed up but you take the bait and either hit bottom or struture.. be it a tree or not.. think of the place that looks like the bait will hang up work this place.. getting hung up is part of the deal.. you either hang or catch fish.. it is remarkable just what kind of mess you can work a crank thru.. also it's quite remarkable how easy you can hang up..

When fishin a crankbait, you gotta run it into structure. Boat dock pilings, tree stumps, rocky bottom. Structure contact is key. It's how I caught this one.

Several possibilities!

1;
You could going to fast

2;
you could be going to slow

3;
you're not using one in the right depth range

4;
you're has rattles and they don't want rattles, and vise-versa

5;
you're not giving them the right presentation

6;
you're not keeping in contact with the bottom
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're are also several solutions!

1-2;
Find use different speed per cast, remember these speeds after you catch a fish, that will be the speed they want

3;
Work the an area with a shallow or deep crank, after dissecting that area completely, with that depth, go to a deeper diving crank if you were using a shallow crank, and a shallower diving crank if you were using a deep diving crank.

4;
Use cranks with different rattles; ones with none, one with some; some with high pitched rattles; ones with low pitched rattles; and so on and so fourth. Start off using ones with no rattles so you don't spook the fish. Go from quieter to louder. Keep in mind, you'll have to have all these and different depth ranges.

5;
As you'll probably know, I'm a firm believer in stop and go. Try mixing the retries up! And ,make sure to stop the crank after it hit a limb; or what ever other kind of structure you're fishing, be it wood, rocks, or points.... Keep in contact with structure.

Once you find what the fish want, stick with that, but don't have to much confidence in a specif crank, the bass could change what they want from hour to hour-- just like you would change what you want, from breakfast luck and dinner.

Hope this help, good luck, and good fishin!

theres a pond i'm going to get out and fish this week thats real mossy but kinda clear..a friend of mine thats great at fishing [dont fish with him because he's verrryyy biast to what he fishes with and nothing else..and his ideas are right and no one elses are]

caught 5 extravagant fish last week off of crankbaits and plastic worms

1- 9 1/2 lb
2 8 lb
2 4.5 lbers

lots of 3 lb less..

he fishes it in the middle..

haha those are some hip-fired shots.. all those trees he says everyonee fishes them and theres nothing there.. he fishes the middle and catches fish..

its a shrine club pond and all the rich mofos go in there with there trailered sneakboats and trolling motors and go in there and make alot of noise..

The only thing I will add is get a lower geared reel I use a 5:3 and I know some of the other guys go down in the 4's it helps a lot .

Nobody mentioned the rod here. Heck a broomstick will kill the action on a good crankbait..

I like a fast but soft tip rod. For shallow cranking I use a 6.6 m St Croix but for deep cranking I use a 7 foot GLASS St Croix.. in med also.

The tip should move with the bait at even the slowest speed.

It makes a difference in how the bait tracks for sure.
