buy some 4/0 offset gammy hooks, and insert the hook through the snout of the toad, then turn it so the barb goes through the pre made slot in the toad, and pull it out the top of the back, then recess to make it weedless.
Throw is out on a cast, and do a steady retrieve on top water, or do a stop and go every 4-5 feet, as a frog naturally swims. When you stop reelng the toad will turn a little and sink in a downward spiral, slowly. You can also throw it on top of vegetation or mat on the wates top, and move it really slow, like a few inches and stop, then repeat, watch for the bass to smack it from under the mat, then wait to feel the weight of the bass before setting the hook. |

another approach is to use a 4/0 Gammakatsu round bend hook....in and out the nose as in texas rigging, then pass the point between the legs and skin hook in the top of the toad at that point........makes it much easier, imo, to set the hook without a lot of plastic in the way.

I think those are a little too small for the Horny Toad.

nope you need at least a 4/0 and I use a 5/0 often too, but most on the board use the 4/0 I believe

3/0 EWG hooks will work but I think the type of line and the rod make a huge difference too. I pefer braided line and a MH Gator rod when fishing heavy grass or slop. A medium action Gator is a pool stick when compared to many brands.
I know guys who use 1/0 wide gap hooks and are successful with the bait. A lot of little bass will take a wack at the bait and it doesn't matter what size hook you have you'll never hook them. |

3/0 is not too small, for sure. It works BETTER for me than the larger hooks, actually. I DO use the 4/0 and 5/0 hooks when I wanna change how the bait falls, but 3/0 WILl and DOES work great. I love fishing the horny toad with a 3/0 EWG.
