Minnows are smaller. Shiners are better for bass, but if you want big ones, catch them yourself.

This brings up a thought I shouldn't have when discussing Crescent lake with you. I would try to catch your own bait from Crescent and use that as bait for the bass. Now the Mudfish will still hit them also. But a Bobber and a Shiner/Bluegill would also be a good choice. If you buy them, make sure you get at least the large ones. They will survive longer, and have more action. If you have a cast net, chum a area fist or even overnight, and then catch them up. I always prefer to use artificials, but do use shiners some especially when fishing with my dad, since that's his prefferred method of bassin.
