It's been my experience that most cities/towns are not really interested in haggling over the true value of what the boat might be, especially since it's difficult to determine. I would say that if its atleat 5 years old they won't even bat an eye at the price. I know that when I bought my last boat they weren't very concerened when it came time to transfer titles and register. I do know that when I bought my truck they were definitely a whole hell of a lot more interested in the value and out came the NADA book (That sucked!!) Here in Maine we have transfer tax, luxury tax & registration based on value...I bought my truck for 5,000 under book..talk about getting the short end...anyways I wouldn't worry much about it

One thing that is very cool is registering your trailer in Maine.
Fill the form out and mail a check for 42 bucks and get a two year tag for your trailer.

No inspection and a two year tag.

Perfectly legal.
