Swimbaits and Mud?

Not hard swimbaits, but the soft plastic ones like the YUM Fat Money Minnow. Do you think they'd work in muddy water? The tail puts of quite a bit of vibration. If you'd use them in muddy water, what colors?

Interesting question. This is going to be my 1st year using a soft swimbait. I'm planning on using them pre & post spawn worked from the shore back to the boat in clear to semi clear water.

They sure wouldn't be my first choice for muddy water. Not that they wouldn't work, but I would reach for a spinnerbait for the flash and vibration before a soft swim bait.

Great question!

I would think that they would do well, since (like you said) they put up a lot of vibrations. I would go with a chartreuse color or dark color.

I knew about using swimbaits as a Buzzbait trailer, so I knew it wouldn't be long before they came out with a spinnerbait version.

I don't really buy the need for a bright color in this situation. I believe that the bass eat in clear and muddy water. In fact I think the bass prefer the ability to ambush that comes with the mud. I think the ability to disrupt water is more important than to shiny.
I throw a lot more hoard bodied swim baits than soft bodied and I don't throw them in the muddy shallow more out of fear of snagging and losing a bait than the effectivness of it.

i watched jimmy hoston outdoors today. dvr'd a show. anyway, they were waying just how far a bass can see in certain cloudiness of muddy water. amazing how far they can see. it was from a study university of oklahoma done. very interesting. they see farther than we think. for instance if we see a white disc dissapier at 2 feet the bass can see from around 10 feet. hmm?

bama not to go against you but I heard on I forget what fishing show that bass can't see that well. thats why they go after flashy bait fish and the vibrations of things. I could be wrong but thats what I heard

I don't know if it can be trusted but this is what I found while searching the subject

bass has a very acute sense of site (or vision) and can see very well in just about any water color condition as well as being able to see at night. How well can a bass see at night? For example, sometimes on a full moon when it really gets bright from the light of the moon to where you can almost read a newspaper outside, a bass can see that good in the darkest of pitch. How is this possible?

The eyes of a bass have rods and cones which naturally adjust under different light conditions (the cones and rods will retract and extend making a natural adjustment for their vision.) Another factor is that a bass doesn’t have any eyelids like you or I and because of a bass not having eyelids overlong exposure to the suns rays will cause a bass eventually to develop cataracts and go blind. (One reason why cover is so important to a bass during bright sunny days or (Bluebird Sky conditions!) A bass can see in most all water colors (clear, semi-stained, stained, murky, and even muddy colors) but when the vision of a bass is restricted the other senses will take over.

Exactly what I was thinking. Nest I go to BPS, I'll see if they have the YUM fat money minnow in white, or white and chartreuse colors.

I looked at those money minnows yesterday but just couldnt decide on em, let me know howthey work for ya, theres a few other brands I want to check out .

Yeah I'm interested in this question as well. My own limited experience with swimbaits so far has been that they're much more effective in clear water. I haven't caught a thing with swimbaits when it's dirty. I'm sure there's somebody out there who does well with em in mud.
