ive been using 5'' berkley jerk shad (hollow body) ...with good results.
i usually throw a 1/4 ounce bullet sinker and use a owner twist-lock 3/0 hook
15lb mono for my line

i tend to use a slower retrieve and pop the rod tip about every 5-7 revolutions on the reel...it one of those baits that you just play with it differently....least i do.
thats my way,but im sure others will have some great tips on this....and welcome to the forum.

um, just rig it weigtless with like a 5/0 hook, or with a swivel like 2 or 3 feet up to add some weight and prevent line twist.....

then throw it out there and either A) let it sink, whether to the bottom of just for a couple secs B) or just start twitching it back

so after its done sinkin, start twitchin it back

and if you come by a piece of cover or you are tryin to get a hit, just let it sink, and after its done start twitchin it again

Most of the time I rig them weightless. But sometimes I'll use a very light (1/16oz or less) keel weighted hook. Just to get a little big of a faster fall, sometimes the faster fall will trigger a strike when a slower fall will not. But sometimes it can have an adverse effect! Try different things, If the unweighted hook works through half the day, and than it turns off, than use a weighted hook. They may have dropped down deeper, and the weighted hook will get it out deeper (duh ). Often times they'll hit this before a worm or jig!

Hope this helps!

If you want to vary the action, you can also rig them through the side rather than the belly. I usually don't do this until the nose has torn. It will make the bait dart out of the water like a bait fish being chased.

Raul gave you the list. It is a very versatile lure. I especially like split shotting flukes. Very, very effective way to get bass to bite.

Also don't rule out dead sticking and burning. Dead sticking is just twitching ever half minute or so.

When you burn it, you dont reel straight. You twitch your rod so as to keep the fluke always breaking and flipping on the surface like a frantic baitfish. Can be verry effective, especially to get reaction strikes from schooling bass or fish in heavy current that have to make split second decisions.

this is a great thing, not only does it save flukes and makes em last longer, it does give it a little different action and it WILL catch fish

I prefer the Bass Assassin over flukes, but maybe it is tomato/to-mah-to argument. I primarily fish them with a weightless 3/0-5/0 straight shank hook. I like to bury the eye of the hook as deep as I can in the bait. I reckon it moves the weight of the hook more towards the center and back of the bait. And allows the head of the bait to either break the surface or come out of the water, depending on the retrieve.

I fish it weightless and keep it close to the top of the water sometimes even bob the head of it out of the water. It is also a good one to throw and drag over lily pads or into pockets in lilys this year is the first time i have tried them and they are now my favorite bait to use

I hope this thread 'aint to old............

But yesterday, I was fishing and not catchin any! Than I took my spinning reel tied on a weighted hook (1/32oz) and but on a baby bass fluke. Now, I wanna point out that I've only caught one big bass outa this lake, and it was on a jig, using casting tackle. So anyway, I was using my casting out, letting it settle on the bottom, and hoping it fast like along the bottom. It gave it a really erratic fall, very jerky and a stray from the the old as to what the bass would normally see on the bottom. Well second cast with it by some small lilly pads. I got one big tick. I weight 3 seconds, and set up on it hard!! I though it was a long that I had been caught on before. Than my drag started zinging... pretty fast too, and for a few seconds (15-20). Than it stopped, and the drag was this time pulled in jerks. Since I had 10lb test on, and already had that drag on hard, I didn't want to horse it in and but on more drag. After a long fight and to what I consider a well played fish. It came close to shore, I bent down to lip it, and I saw it was barely hooked! It made one last lung for freedom and came off! That fish has easily topped 5lbs! I think it might have been a seven!

Well there's one way to use a fluke, thought I might let you know... just wait longer to set the hook unlike I did!

Just goes to show it pays it go the extra dollar for gammies! If I had done two thing different, I would had that fish!

1. let it take it longer
2. used gamakatsu hooks.

Let this be a lesson to everyone!

I have some of those Zoom Salty Super Flukes, they are around 5 inches, I think. Anyhow, I can use a 2/0 with no ill effect. I'm not too good with hook sizes, but those work fine. I Texas rig them. This is what I go by with plastic worms -

3-5" - 1/0

5-6" - 2/0

7-8" - 3/0

10" - 4/0

10-12" - 5/0

I use a 5/0 or 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook either weightless or you can take a piece of a coat hanger stick it sideways through the head area then clip it off flush to the other side of the head with your needle nose pliers to add weight to make it sink faster or deeper.

My favorite place to fish a fluke is around weed beds. They are pretty weedless. Twitch, twitch, twitch, long pause to let it fall then repeat all the way back to the boat.
