Default mepp's inline spinners

I have never used these type spinners until this year, but i think they are my new go-to when nothing else is working. I've caught more fish on these than everything else in my tackle box combined.

ive been having most success with a #2 size on a light-setup with 6 lb. test

The Mepps spinner is still a very good bait. In fact, it was my dads favorite. He mostly only threw two. A Mepps #2 squirrel tail with silver or gold blade, or a #5 white with a silver blade. He called that one "Whitey". He just slayed them on both.

My dad is also a big fan of Mepp's and Rooster Tails. They are very productive baits that most bass fishermen probably overlook. The other nice thing about them is they will catch bluegill, crappie, bass, trout and many other species, i'm sure. I caught tons of fish on them when I was younger.

Definately a classic.
Helpful tip # 43 Small keel weight>Sampo swivel> 2 ft leader> Mepps

I didn't fish for largemouth until my early twenties. I grew up fishing for smallmouth in the Upper Iowa river. A #1 red and white Mepps with hair on the treble hook has out-produced ALL OTHER LURES combined for river smallies. I have at least 4 with me whenever I'm in a canoe on my favorite smallie river.

This year I spooled a reel with Nanofil. I will use it for some large-mouth finesse fishing, but I really had small-mouth fishing and a Mepps in-line spinner in mind when I decided to go with Nanofil.

I carry 4 in-line spinners when smallmouth fishing. A Mepps is always my first choice, but I will also tie on a Panther Martin. I also use "Blue Fox Flash-Spinners" --they have a lead body and run a foot or two deeper than a Mepps which is nice if the current is a stronger than normal. Unfortunatly, I don't care for the available colors from Blue Fox; last year I caught a nice 18" smallie on a blue-fox which I hand-painted red and white. Lastly, I carry a couple Rooster Tails, but I can't remember the last time I tied one on.

Work great on almost all species however drawback is line twist.Swivel eliminates it but also reduces the number of hits.

Used them for trout and always pulled in a couple of bass with them. Never used them outright for bass though. Used the big ones for muskies. Might have to throw them again.

I use # 2's and 3's for river smallmouth all the time. Great lures before they start keying in on crawdads!

And you will unless...Never fish an in line spinner without a good quality ball bearing swivel. A small snap/swivel is ideal.

Wise advise Keith, although I don't embrace the snap. Even with swivels small diameter monofilaments develop considerable twist fishing in-lines... most light braids not so much. Unfortunately NanoFil's "uni-filament" construction mimics a monofilament more than a braid in this situation.

After a year with NanoFil I'm developing a situational approach when using it.

I love these baits! I have always had great luck with em. However lately nothing has been working for me.

Interesting... I hadn't thought of line twist being an issue. It doesn't look like I will get a chance to canoe my favorite smallmouth river until late summer or possibly August; my Calendar for June and early July is pretty full. I do have a canoe trip planned for the weekend before Labor-Day and was hoping to get one more trip in before then, but so far I haven't been able to schedule it.

I've been meaning to get the nanofil spooled up, but the main reason I got it was for chasing smallmouth with light tackle like the in-line spinners discussed in this thread.

Default mepps in-line spinners

They were my favorite lure for fishing the Delaware River in NJ/PA. Caught tons of smallies even some trout. I'd use the big ones (#5 I think) when I went to Canada and Pike loved it. One I had with a white buck tail by the end of the week the bucktail was completely gone from the pike tearing it up. Now I live in FL. I don't use them down here but I'd like to try. I think the cuda in the salt water canals would love em.

Default If I could only have one lure for freshwater

It would be a #2 Mepps, gold blade and body with squirrel tail on the hook. It can catch anything from trout to muskies.
