Default Fill My Newbie Tackle box and another question

I just wanted to get a couple of questions answered, cause i have been out of the game since i had to start buying a fishing licence.

1) How long does mono line last? I have a roll of Spider Wire that I bought probably 12 years ago or so. Im assuming that I need to replace it, but I was just wondering if I didnt need to.

2) My second question is kind of a fun game for all of the Vets out there. Here is the game: Give me some suggestions to create a well rounded Noob tackle box. List some items that I should pick up so that I can handle different situations. Some suggestions for soft baits, spinners, etc. would be great.

I have read through most of the articles and watched most of the videos on this site, and I have to say that Kevin is one heck of a film maker, producer, and presentor.

Thanks to all!!!

Get some crankbaits that run shallow, such as Baby 1 minus. Get a really bright colored one like chartreuse with a blue back, get a baby bass colored one, and a couple light colored ones for clear water.
Get some mid diving crankbaits like Bandit 200's in Red craw, bluegill, and any pattern that looks like the baitfish on the lakes/ponds/rivers you fish
Get some 5" senko's in baby bass, junebug, watermelon w/black flake, and natural shad
Tube baits in watermelon or pumpkin
A 7" worm with a ribbon tail, like a berkeley power worm
White spinnerbaits in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 oz Try to stay away from pure white, go for a bait that is a white base with a little extra color thrown in there. Try to get the baits that have both a copper/gold/brass blade with a chrome blade.
Chartreuse spinnerbaits, the same weights. Usually a chartreuse with orange and a green works great
A couple Pop-R's one dark colored, one light colored (bone is a good color for your light color)
A prop bait like a smithwick devil horse, and a bait that will walk, baby spooks are good for this.
A couple jerkbaits one that suspends, and one that floats
Buzzbaits, a black, a white, and a chartreuse.
A couple 1/2 oz jigs in different colors...
Don't forget terminal tackle. 2/0 and 3/0 EWG hooks are good for the tubes and senko's
1/4 oz bullet weights for getting your plastics a little deeper

If you only have one rod/reel, use a 10 pound mono, I like Sufix the best, but other people will differ. The reason I say mono is this. You can fish all around with mono. Topwater lures won't work on flouro, and braid doesn't give enough for all of the baits. Mono is a good all around line. If you have more than one rod, buy a thing of braid or flouro depending on what you want it for,and what you will use more of, and a thing of mono.
Hope this helps.

looks like he has u pretty well covered...can only think of a few things to add

some kind of frog to fish in grass or other kinds of cover(i prefer the dean rojas spro frog) but any of the weedless frogs will work

a few packs of trick worms(green pumpkin, junebug, etc.)

a good hook sharpener...this will save u a lot of frustration

If you need a tacklebox, I've got 1 or 2 I'm not using at the moment that I might be persuaded to part with. Nothing big, nothing fancy, but in ok shape. I'll see if I can post a pic for demonstration purposes.

Alright, first off, when I started I got a tackle box and soon wished I had gone with a bag. I'm in the process of switching over to utility boxes in a bag now.

1) I if you store your mono is a dark place that's not hot, it should last about 2 years, maybe longer.

2) Plastics: Can't go wrong with some 7" Power Worms, and some Chigger Craws to start.

Spinnerbaits: I'd pick up at least 6. make sure you cary the blade shape (colorado and willow) and the colors. My favorite is White and chartreuse, but plain white is good too. I'd also pick up a buzzbait. Black or White and chart.

Cranks: Definately get some Bandit 100's. The bluegill color is my best producer. Bomber also makes a good crank, check out the models 2A-6A.

Jigs: get a few. Black and blue and natural green colors are my favorite. My favorite brand is BOOYAH (same for spinnerbaits).

Terminal tackle: For the worms and craw, 2/0 to 4/0 EWG hooks. Gamakatsu or Owners are the best IMO. Come bullet weight, BPS or whereever you're getting your stuff at may have a pack with a bunch of different weights.

As you learn more, you'll get more stuff, so don't get a tackle box that will just hold what you bought on day one. You can even do what I do a lot. Buy something cause it looks neat and then get on here and figure out how to use it.

get a couple diff. rattle traps also if uv got any money left after everything we have told you to buy...lol

if u are on a limited budget like me, and can only spend 10 or 15 bucks at a time, i would start out getting plastics

then start on top water

then start on crankbaits and spinner baits and rattle traps

then get you some frogs

as far as crank baits go, u cant go wrong with a series 3 sexy shad made by strike king

as far as rattle traps go u cant go wrong period...but my favorites are the bill lewis rattle traps in blue n chrome, black n chrome, or gold

good luck

I may embrace the bait monkey a bit this weekend. I cant decide if i need a new rod. I picked up all my old stuff from my parents house, and borrowed my dads rod that i use as a kid, and I'm starting to think that it may be an antique, and should be stored instead of still being used.

The one thing we forgot to say, which is a very important first step:

Save or inheret a lot of money, or win the lottery.

How many members are on here, and how much does the average boat cost? The only place i have to use one around here is the delaware river I think.
