Default Loon's nest & eggs

I know you're supposed to keep your distance from a loon's nest, but since a pair of them have chosen to nest right near the No Wake Zone that we need to go through to get to the big portion of our lake, we get a fairly close-up view of their nest every time we go through. One of them was sitting on it both times we went through yesterday, but they were both off the nest this morning when I came back from my morning fishing outing. Thought you might enjoy these pics I took.

Loons are very cool birds! We actually have a pair on our lake this year. Typically they prefer deeper clear lakes (which ours is not). They are fun to watch.

Simply beautiful! Thanks for sharing, Dean.

I hope you don't mind me posting some sounds of the loon. IMO nothing speaks the sound of the Northern Lakes more than the solemn sounds of the loon.

Nice to get that close to a loon, although he/she might not have enjoyed it as much as you did.

I don't mind at all! Thanks for sharing. There is nothing quite like hearing loon calls from all over the lake or from overhead when they are in flight...totally amazing. I wish everyone had the chance to experience it at least once. We have loons all over the place on the lake we're on.

Yep, I'm quite sure he/she didn't, but there is boat/pontoon traffic passing by them often every day due to where they are nesting. Last year when they nested there, they had a lot more cover from the shoreline grasses and you could barely tell they were there.

When they aren't nesting, they seem to be used to boats being everywhere as they will often come right up to you and even seem to follow us around at times.

Here are a couple more of my favorite loon pics that I've taken in past years where they came right up to us.

Very nice photos Dean! I love loons myself, and it's great to see a nesting pair on eggs.
