Well BM. there is tons of things you can do to upgrade. You stated you wanted power trim, well as Cajun stated it's not cheap. Since this is a home made boat, you may run into problems with any aftermarket add on fitting? There are lots of sites out there that are for folks redoing there boats. I would suggest 1 thing at a time, unless your pocket book is like zooker's where you have money hand over fist to spend on the boat. It's great to have a new boat, but it can also be a lot of maintenance. If you could post a picture of this boat, it may be helpful.

Put a list of things that you would like to upgade or change. Start with the most important and then the next important etc.. I'm sure we can get you some info.

Here's the picture.

What is it? 15? 16 feet? It looks a bit like a Skeeter Starfire from the late 80's or so. If so, it's a pretty good design. Power trim would be a good addition. The problem is you have a Suzuki motor, so it's probably not going to be easy to find a unit to retrofit. What HP is the boat rated for? I think you said it has an 85 hp now? Is that right? If you really want power trim you'd probably be better off to try to sell the motor you have and get another one.

What else you want to know about it?

If that's a 16 foot boat, you couldn't beat me with a stick and get me to put a 150 on it. It might be rated for it, but that's a lot of motor on a small boat. About 90, maybe 115 is as much as I'd put on it.

If you want to look for a used power trim unit, just do an internet search for "used outboard motor parts". Might as well use the power of the internet to see how much the basic parts will set you back. I did a quick search and came up with dozens of places that list used parts. Rather they have what you're looking for I have no idea. You'd need to know the year, model, and the Ser. number of your particular motor probably.

The other stuff you can get at Bass Pro Shops or any local place that sells boating equimpent. For that size boat, a 12 volt trolling motor should be good enough. Get one of the high thrust ones, say 54, 55 # depending on the manufacturer. They've both good motors, just depends on what you want. Get a GOOD battery. Personally I use a group 29 everstart Maxx, the big yellow one's from Wally World. They're inexpensive (about 65 bucks) carry an 18 month warranty, and there is a Wally World about anywhere you go if you do have problems with them. I never have in the two years I've been using mine. They pull just as hard the last time I used the boat, (Dec 31st) as they did the first time I used them.

Gages, you probably have a speedomer, and a tach. You can get new ones at Bass Pro Shops. You want a water pressure gage. A trim gage will be ok if you get power trim added onto it. I've never seen much need for one myself, I just trimmed a boat by "feel" but some people like them. You can also get a voltage gage to tell you the state of your starting battery. How big is the gas tank? I assume it's a built in one? You'll want a gas gage too.

When you say "rod holders" do you mean the kind that hold your rods while you're fishing? Or the kind that hold your rods for storage? You can get both kinds from bass pro shops, as well as "Rod Saver" type tie downs to keep your rods from bouncing out of the boat when traveling.

You can get a good marine wax at any place that sells boating equipment. Some automobile parts places sell it too. Frankly I've always used automobile polish on mine, but I've heard recently it's not a good idea. I never saw where it hurt anything, but thought I'd throw that in.

If it were me. I'd skip the power trim unit. It would be nice, but you can find a compromise spot that will work ok. You're not going to gain that much speed really by being able to trim it out to the max. It looks like it would be a good fishing boat. If you really want to make it faster, upgrade the engine to a 115 and add dual steering.
