Welcome to the forum, JR!

Since you are fishing a river I'm going to assume there is going to be current. Â*That will dictate where the fish are positioned. Â*Most likely they will be behind current breaks like rocks, wing dams, brush, etc. Â*in slack water. Â*Fish the still areas out of the current. Â*One tactic is to throw upstream and let the bait wash down into the calmer water. Â*The key thing if you are fishing current is to throw upstream and work the bait back with the current rather than against it. Â*If you throw downstream and pull your bait back upstream it will not look natural. Â*For lures I'd recommend small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, and grubs or tubes.

That being said, I don't fish for smallies since I'm in South Texas and smallies are not real prominent but I have used this tactic for largemouth in some of the rivers down here and a bass is a bass, so I hope this helps. Â*Good luck!

Ditto on what Reb said, and good luck. Smallies are fun.

A smallie and a largemouth ain't that much different. Reb is dead on.
