Default Craziest Tournament, what would you do?

Well what started as a challenge quickly turned into a small tournament.

There are now five boats, all human powered or trolling motor propelled..
Two more currently who want in.
That's seven anglers and maybe as many as ten by time of challenge.

$10 dollar per angler entry.

Drawing for launch position but more like claiming a starting point.
Have to leave at least 10-15 yard courtesy space between competiters.

This BoW is only 13 acres and max depth 18 feet. Maybe 1/2 acre deep hole.
At least one acre is roped off beach so really a 12 acre BoW.
Mostly 5-10 feet deep.
Visibility probably 2 feet.
2 hour maybe 3 hour time limit.
Using Kayak rules, large fish determined by length not weight.
Must take pic with measurement device for 'weigh in'...'measure in'.
Launch time 6am. I'm trying for a 5am start and 3hrs.

This challenge started between Hunter (8lb. bass from prior post) and me.
Started as a bet for a candy bar between Hunter and I.

Now a couple of the old trouters are going to bring grills and shore breakfast for measure in. One's bringing donuts for pre-launch, launch.
None are actually in challenge. Word on the Pond is the trouters want to be there to give ME greif at measure in.

So my strategy.
I'm going to flip the shore at my start point and work as much shore as I am able to.
But that will probably be everyone's strategy.

So back up is,

One pole setup with lipless crank.
One pole with popper or maybe a walking bait. This will be switched to a ribbit if I feel slow aint working.
Obviously a NuTech Jig on one.
A creature or lizzard style with a 1/4 oz Tungsten setup.
And a worming pole. Probably start wacky but I think 'power fishing' is going to be my original goal. So probably quickly switch to weightless Texas rigged.

Last half hour I'm going to finesse fish the deeper holes or water.
I know where cribs are and my big advantage is....I have electronics.
I doubt anyone is planning on fishing off the shoreline.
I'm going to drop shot here. Cause it will be crunch time and in Wi. I can use jig as dropshot weight. TWO BAITS fished together.

So your mission is to tell me if you like my strategy.
How maybe I can improve it or maybe drop it all together and try a different approach.

Remember this is 13 acres and probably 8-10 anglers so every inch will be fished by more than one presentation and my job will be to make fish 'bite me' after others have already fished it. Probably numerous different anglers.
Anticipated date, July 15th.

Ok, here is what I would do.
Pole one. 1/4 oz. spinner bait, white/chartreuse.
Pole 2, popper as stated, and a Heddon Baby Torpedo. Walking baits in smaller sizes might work too, but I'd steer clear of the larger ones.
Pole 3. Frog rather than a jig this time of year, especially with all the shallow water around.
Pole 4. Pitchin a beaver or craw!
Pole 5. Your choice for a worming rod works for me. Wacky, weighted, un-weighted. And even a soft jerk bait on hand as well. I've done very well with a 6 inch black worm t- rigged with a 1/8 oz. weight on small bodies of water.
You didn't mention any crank baits, and since you know the water better than I, I'm sure you have your reasons. But I'd want a couple Bandit 100 crank baits along for sure.

Keith, thank you for some great input!

Crank problem is a lot of floating eel grass and other grasses.
Fear is that I may have more time spent on cleaning line and trebles than fishing. (2-3 hr. fishing slot).
I will have a couple of squarebills handy though.
The lipless may work best cause can rip through standing grasses but that floating crap makes cranking tough.
Will have flukes too. Caffene Shad.
Some frog bites happen here but few and far between. Very little mat or surface veg. so poppers can usually out preform hollow bodies.
If wrong, Ribbit action, slow.

Keith and anyone else, I want input from none locals because I like many will fish what 'usually' is thrown and that may not be a good strategy on a short time frame and ALL anglers familar with the BoW.?.

Keith thanks again.

seeing as it is a pond (sorry, 12 acres is a pond down here), and it is north and all. i would go with keith's order.

Ya, it's a pond.....puddle. No apologies necessary. That's the insane part.
Also the challenge.
So many bassers and so little water. 4 anglers fishing have pulled at least 6pounders from this puddle.
But all except Hunter are severe creatures of habbit. And I unfortunatly have created a lot of thier habbits.

Being honest....if I beat Hunter....I'M HAPPY!
Thing started when Hunter ask me when I'd take a morning to boat fish with him.....said he needed to "School" me on fishing. Couldn't let that slide

Hmmm toss negative lead off a battery off left side of boat and tie positive lead on a crankbait and hang off right side net anything that comes up inbetween using rubber handle on net.Small lake 2 lures come to mind a frog for that grass be it floater or horny toad and an unweighted senko 4 in.
Glad to see your enjoying that yak.

John, Mule thanks for great input.

Mule, I've got some M-100s a client who was a licsensed pyro makes them.
We're talking old school M-100s if you know what I mean.
But I do have the battery on board.

You know that 4inch senko has me thinking.
I got mostly 5in or larger but I do have a pack of watermelon 4in dingers.
Now do you anglers think I should chart. the tail. (bait marker)?

One angler is a one trick angler. Wacky rigged dingers. His go to this year is smoke/pearl.
So ya think or does anyone wacky a 4in plastic?

Thanks again everyone.

Oh I should mention that this is in no way real important but heck, it's competition........."winning isn't everything" is usually said by someone who didn't win.

Winning is EVERYTHING!
And anyone who knows me...."I overthink EVERYTHING!"

You can watermelon my favorite is a two part bottom say white and top chart or yellow,or toss a purple or blue one with sparkle, again no weight its a finesse thing.
As for the m100s was a semi joke, old crank radio or phone works well dont ask me how i know, dnr uses a more modern device that does same, also illegal for an individual to use.
Your in competition with others in a small area finesse not power fishing.Yet dont forget a frog or toad.
And often the larger senkos work just as well when unweighted.

I took a buddy out fishing last year and he wacky-rigged a watermelon/red Zoom Speed Worm with the tail pinched off, making it about 4", but he was fishing it on a dropshot. He just KILLED the bass on it that day (caught 20 to my 6)...for whatever that's worth.

Check out this post for something slightly different that you may want to consider trying.

And you know I'm always going to suggest this as something to try because it has caught bass for me day in and day out. And I've also used it with good success on a couple lakes with even less visibility than the BOW you'll be on.

That's my two cents.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Dean and Mac thank you.

I tell myself everytime I hear Zoomies that I HAVE to TRY IT.
Just maybe this time I actually will.

Thanks folks.

Oh my thinking on waiting for the last 1/2 hr to finesse was the two hr time slot. Figured if I spent the whole time finessing I just maybe making a mistake. Now you anglers got me thinking the opposite.

Dropshotting can be worked faster if an angler is inclined and the 1/4 oz. finesse jig for weight plus I've never shown anyone of these anglers how or when to dropshot.....this just maybe my angle.
Heck we have a three lure rule in Wi., I could throw the dropshot and just let the wind drift me while I power fish and Zoomie another rod.

Again anglers thanks.
Oh, saw Hunter and his dad at the puddle this morning. They launched at about 6 and fished just the two hour time slot, left at like 8.

I SUCK AT FISHING!

That's all I can say.
3 longest fish....third place.
Biggest Bass....third place.

Guy who got biggest used wacky....all morning. Never used anything else.
Guy with most....wacky all morning.
Same angler.
I used four presentations...well 5 seeing I texas and wackied a worm/stickbait/jerkbait.

Forgot camera for a pic and release Tournament so had to use phone.
Only I could do that.
Most know about my feelings on taking a phone fishing.
Should have known what was coming after a great start like that.
Kind of surprised I didn't forget the poles.

Didn't forget to bring donuts for the launch though.

So you left the m100 at home and didnt finesse enough-could be worse camera no,truck keys as locked - the good news is phone photos make them appear longer.

Mule thank you for the positives and doing the WEEDING for me.

I let everyone choose thier starting spot first and the winner I told him the day before where I would start.
He started there and never moved from that bank.
Had a 30 foot courtouscy space limit so that bank never opened for me to fish. Caught a 3 and a 2.8 there Sunday morning while I checked the rudder fix I did.

No excuses though......I WAS OUT FISHED! Simple as that!

Side note, I caught a 6lb. carp,28inches.
Hit a dinger in like a foot of water. Ran deep immediatly so I played um and once it got close and came back up I saw the scales......and cried.
FLUKING GOLDFISH!!!!!!
Serious though, I enjoyed and loosing can only make me stronger!!

Suggest you not tell him where you will start at next time.
Or tell him a different spot so you get that one, make sure to show photos of lots of fish caught there, but not the gold one lol.Been there done that ,thought had big bass until same upon viewing, mine however ate a tube on the fall and had colored it self to match the rocks, smallie with down turned mouth lol.
A dinger is just a softer senko

Ya I'm crazy with sharing.

Next morning Bill, the winner called me up and asked if I'd join him in his boat and fish a couple of hours. Of course I said OK.
Anytime I fish with anyone there WILL BE A WAGER on something. Usually, first, most, biggest. I'm talking like a donut or a buck or a candy bar, nothing big.
Bill decided $5 big bass.
I'm now only out ten dollars.
Caught a biggie on a jig EXACTLY where I fished the SAME JIG the day before.
THANK YOU BO!

Oh did I mention....FLUKING GOLDFISH!!!!

Oh and Dean and Mac, I AM GOING TO ZOOMIE!!!

Oh I should mention and thank all of you for the ideas.
THEY WILL GET USED!!!!

I took a Big Fish stratagy cause of my starting spot and then I felt finessing was too slow after I saw Bill boat his biggie.

Made some very poor decisions but hey, We're talking JoeDog.
Oh and the nursing home must of left the backdoor unlocked again cause a half a dozen of the OLD TROUTERS left the pond they all fish EVERY morning and came to the measure in.
I don't think they have EVER enjoyed ANYTHING as much as RAZZING ME and my great failure.
I think they drew straws to see who got to give me crap first.
And yes they ALL took a turn.
It was like a ROAST or something.

Oh did I mention.....FLUKING GOLDFISH!!!!!

My nephew, who hasn't fished in 8+ years, showed up this week at our cabin with a fishing license. Yesterday he caught two smallmouth from our dock. Today he caught another smallmouth, then a largemouth, and then a 5lb 1oz northern pike. All fish were caught on the same lure. I'll let you guess what it was.
