Help...I'm Jig challenged

my jigs are in 3 colors that work for me. melon seed,green pumkin,and pot/red flake-also known as sticky bud- all work well with either a green pumkin or a watermelon seed colored trailer..

a black and blue jig has caught me more PNJ bass than any other color. I recently purchased one that was all blue, and I'm going to give it a try. As for a trailer, I like the Zoom Ultra Vibe trailers.

Agree. Blue/black jig with a Zoom Blue/black Super chunk trailer. Most of the water I fish is stained/murky though. When I do get a chance to fish clearer water I use Green pumpkin with a green pumpkin Zoom Super chunk trailer. I almost always fish with a 3/8 oz. jig. To me, most any jig will catch fish but the key to a really good jig is to find one that won't keep you hung up all the time yet will stick and hold your fish. The weed guard is critical.

Fishing With Jigs

There seems to be one thing most anglers do that isn't quite right. That's how they fish a jig. Most fish it faster they they should. Jigging can produce a nice quanity of bass but it's main goal is to produce quality bass.

In The Spring

Fish brush, lily pads that are just coming up, boat docks and rocks. Try fishing shallow water, it warms up fastest. Fish with a 1/2 ounce jig tipped with pork.


In The Summer

Now is when most anglers go to a faster moving lure, you should try jigging. Fish creek beds, channels, grass and lily pads.


In The Fall

Try fishing jigs around wood. Logs, stumps, boat docks and downed trees are good places to fish your jig this time of year. Also try the lily pads that are dying off.

In The Winter

Rivers are great for winter fishing. Try to find slow moving water in the 3 to 9 foot range. A heavier jigs like a 3/8 ounce tipped with pork works good. Deep water can find schools of bass in slow moving water.


Jigging can be one of the best bass producing methods if you fish it slow enough. Keep the jig in front of the fish, move it very slow and you'll have good results if there are fish to be caught.

Ive fished jigs for every freshwater species that swims and will hit a jig, Ive had awesome results for smallmouth and trout, with maribou jigs. And also do well here on the TN river, Chickamauga, Nickajack, and Guntersville lakes on Crawfish colored jigs ( dark brown with orange and dark green skirts ) and even white silcone legged jigs with several strips of rabbit fur skin, like used on zonkers for the fly fishing guys use. Im sold on jigs . but they have there place like every other lure, depending on season, I throw jigs moslty in winter, and fall. And catch many swimming white jigs down drops near dying weed beds in late fall.
But my favorite bait almost year round is a crank bait, or minnow type baits that suspend .. but thats off topic .. like others have stated previously fish them for at least 1 month and nothing else, but jigs dont all have to wiegh 1/2 oz .. I catch most of my larger bass on my local lakes, by giving bass something they have not seen b4, I start off with 1/2 oz jigs and 3/8 oz in warmer deeper water, dropping down ledges of river channel, but when water gets down in the 70s I slow it down, and use lighter weight baits that slowly drop around brush, docks, and grass edges .. every one has a technic or fav jig .. experimenting has one me more money than doing what everyone else is doing.

otto how do u rig the kalins on that slider head i fish them too, but i hook mine 1/4 inch in the rig it weedless

Lots of good info here. The most popular colors with the pro's is black blue. Having said that I prefer watermelon or some variation of that.
Trailors can be varied. If you are going to use a chunk type frog trailor you can use pork or plastic. It seems to me that the fish will hold on to pork a little longer. I replace the brine that comes in the jar with scent. Jigs are the most versitile lure in your box. They can be swam, dragged,hopped, flipped .pitched or cranked to any depth or cover.
Sometimes I use craw trailor and sometimes i place a worm or grub on the jig as a trailor.
Try this. Take only jigs and trailors to the lake and fish it until you catch fish. Then start varying the look.That is waht I did many years ago. It is the overall best lure in your box year round.It will catch big fish consistantly
