WEll in my general area there are LM, suwanee bass, sunshine bass, hybrids, striper, redeyes and the occasional shoal bass. Then in salt, there are black sea bass (not related) ad red bass (red drum, redfish, don't think it's related.) I've also heard of rock bass.

Bass is a generic word used to name a huge number of species. The genera Micropterus is formed by the following species:

1.- Micropterus salmoides or largemouth bass
2.- Micropterus dolomieu or smallmouth bass
3.- Micropterus punctalatus or spooted bass
4.- Micropterus treculli or Guadalupe bass
5.- Micropterus cataractae or Shoal bass
6.- Micropterus coosae or Red Eye bass
7.- Micropterus notius or Suwanee bass

Other fish called bass are for example Stripped bass and white bass but they don´t belong to the same genera they belong to the genera Morone and so on, so the fact that it has the name bass in it doesn´t necessarily mean they are related.

Exclamation

Factoid!
Those species which we lovingly pursue and refer to as "Bass"...Largemouth, etc, at al, are NOT bass at all. They are, in fact, members of the Sunfish tribe. Yep, cousins of the Bluegill, Crappie, and that bunch.

The "Striper", Hybrid Striper, (AKA "Wiper", the result of a "marriage" of Striper and the White Bass.) White Bass (AKA Sand Bass), Yellow Bass (Also AKA Sand Bass) ARE true bass.

Now ain't that a bubble-burster?

A chrome plated whiz-bang is the only lure that will catch a spooted bass-just an FYI.
