Default fav. spinnerbait techniques

My fav. spinnerbait technique is the bulge. (when you bring the spinner to the top of the water so the blades just break the surface)

please inform me on yours.

Well this may sound sad, but I've never used a spinnerbait and caught a fish on it. I'm usually a plastics kinda guy

Make that 3 of us. I fish it in that manner about 95% of the time. I used to watch my favorite pro, Jimmy Houston, fish em' that way 20 years ago.

well, that makes 4! If my life depended on me catching a bass on a spinnerbait, I'd be dead!

My favorite way use spinnerbaits is to cast them into thick cover such as downed trees or bushes and retrieve it just over the trees branches bumping it into a few branches here and there. I always immediately start the retrieve as soon as the bait gets just above the branches and I always keep a visual on the spinnerbait as I retrieve it slowly.

I forgot to add that if you can't precisely put the bait in a good spot without a splash you should always throw past to the other side of the downed tree and bring it through that way. Don't be scared of hanging up because most spinnerbaits will deflect off of objects if you keep a steady retrieve. If your just plain scared of throwing in to thick cover with a spinner bait you shouldn't be throwing one in the first place!

Some times I will kill it when I'm bringing it by a tree, other than that, it's bring it on home high and fast.

I might add that I most always use a trailer, whether it be a store bought trailer or a grub or a 3 or 4 even a 5in worm. And when the fish are hitting short, I will add a trailer hook.

I like to bump into timber and let it flutter down a few seconds before the
next retrieve, have had good luck with this method on getting strikes.
I also really love to pitch the spinnerbait up close, like a worm presentation, and ease it into the water without a wake,
thats probably one of my most fav. ways to fish..

anything except slow rollin! I do all sorts of things with a spinner, but for some reason that technique just sucks for me when using a spinnerbait. Throw em everywhere..against cover, over, around, on structure, open water...the sink, the yard, wherever I can throw a spinnerbait, I'll throw it!

I'm purty much the same way when it comes to spinner baits. I might even go to a 1/2 or 3/4 when it's choppy and windy. Normally I use a 1/4 or 3/8. But you're right there are ton's of way to fish em.

Over the top of weedbeds and then letting it helicopter drop just as it clears the edge. Read it somewhere. Seems like a great idea.

Thomas! Try other baits too. If you don't own spinner baits, I suggest you start out with a beetle spin. It's just a smaller version of a spinner bait. When I take a kid fishing with me he always seems to out fish me with his beetle spin. You will have lots of fun trying other baits and methods. Worms and soft plastics are great baits. But when you hook up with your first bass on a spinner bait you will notice right away that you can cover more structure and make many more cast. And you don't have to pay multi bucks for decent spinners, saw some nice ones at sports authority just the other day for under $1.50...Goodluck, and happy fishing.

I don't have a "favorite" method because the cover I'm fishing ussually dictates how I'm going to fish a spinnerbait. The local lake I fish has a lot of emergent grass growing from the bank out to about 2ft of water...then coontail from that edge down to 7' to 9' of water depending on the area. I like to throw the spinner bait up ontop of the emergent weed line and pull back into the water, then rip it a foot or two till it clears just where i can see the weeds. Then I kill it and let it drop 6" to a foot and twitch and start a medium retrieve ticking the tops of the coontail. If there are fish in that area and active this generally will generate a strike...it's like a three in one retrieve.

Pardon me for hijacking this thread but I would like to comment on Jimmy Houston. I wish more people in this world were like him. Always smiling and joking. Smiles even when he's being serious. Never heard anything negative about the man. Never met the man but it seems like I've known him personally for years. I, like Jimmy, kiss my bass also but only the big ones. (females presumably) I ain't kissin' no males, if I can help it. I've got a good reputation to uphold on my fishing waters. LOL

The spinner bait is one of my favorites. And I find that 90% of my strikes come on the initial fall, or when I'm zippining it in and stop it at tructure or cover and let it fall. Some times on a laydown I can pull one off and he will take it on the move, but mostly it's on the initial fall.

Thomas you can also go to wally world and get the spinners in the box on the bottom of the shelf for a buck a piece. I seem to have the most luck with the white ones with a willow leaf and indiann blade.
