I go ice fishin every year. Its more or less just to get out with the boys, swap stories and eat good food cooked on the grill right out on the lake, maybe catch an ocassional fish or 2.Don't pass the swedish pimple lures up if you see them for sale in your area. P N J

Sorry for the late response.Thank you JB.I like the ones that glow, but I haven't bought a color yet that didn't work.I tip them with meal worms, wax worms, night crawlers, mouse grubs during the winter and I use a plain spoon in the spring through early summer I vertical jig for lake trout and land lock salmon.and then again in late August through November off primary points for a wide variety of species of fish. They flat out work , no matter if there is ice or not. They work fine in the fall on deep points when the white bass are feeding, and often times the lazy ol' walleye will hang below the white bass feed and get the shad that are dazed by the white bass.
the swedish pimple works with a grub to for some anglers.
At the pond, I'll ice fish with a teardrop 1/32
ounce jig, pink, white or green glow (as pnj stated) and usually use 1 or 2 lb test, a tip it on a 2 ft pole.
Worst thing about ice fishing is when you manually pull the line up and it ends up sticking to the ice...most days arent like that, its just when the temp is warm enough to have a slush on top.
We also take small sled type sitting boxes out on the ice, put a lantern in it with a hand size opening to keep the hands warm.
The big Lake St. marys north of us has plenty of shanties usually over the creek channel or a deep spot, where perch 12 inches long or sometimes crappie hit.
With us , its usually a sorting out game of bluegills, but about everyday a bass or crappie will bite, then ya have to figure out how to bring them up through a 6 inch hole

i really like them on a windless tip up. them and a 3/4 oz ratltrap. were my go to baits. the rapala jigging minnow is a super bait that works great. but they are miserable to deal with. there is only one place to grab them and not grab a hook that is the line tie.i fished mainly for trout, bass, chain pickeral, and blue gill-brim- lots of live bait mostly mullers minnows and shaky's mousies. pnj should know both of these as there are names of tackle places in bath..
largest bass was well over any i have caught so far. which i had to release-bumber- have caught 48+" tirgers out of the same lake through the ice. biggest trout 15 pounds and was a real pain to yank through an 8" hole drilled in 5 feet of ice. used to fish the frostbiter's tourny every year from 84-93 winning it twice placeing 6 times in money also took jr frostbiter of the year when i was 12 -1985-
so yeah i think i may have yanked only few fish through the ice

the ponds are freezing over here.it won't be long now.i use the chrome pimple with the green prism(1/8oz) mostly, tipped with a mousie or maggot.
also the kastmaster spoon is awesome.usually when one doesn't work the other one does.i use the small kastmaster in chrome/blue.again tipped with mousies.
the rapala jigging minnows(white/chartreuse)the smallest ones work good for me.
if you want to catch big bass use a @#$%^&*()_......................

As far as Ice augers go, I use the lazor brand, its a black auger with a 6 inch cut, you can go through a foot of ice in no time at all.
Around here in ohio they sell a blue auger, I think everyone has one, I've had two that I have owned , but is out of round(digs oval shaped hole) and takes forever, the other one sucks to..that black lazer is really sharp.
Ya just have to watch the cutting blades on ice augers, make sure you dont set them on the ice to hard or take the edge off of them.
When searching for fish, ya may end up diggin dozens of holes moving around.
Remember, when you hear the ice moaning and groaning, its making ice, getting thicker.
Ya may get an occasional crack that is a mile long after you drill a hole,
and always try to look out for weak spots in the ice as you walk over the lake to get to the desired spot...Hey, its a good thing!

There's hardly any ice up here... usually the ponds are frozen over by now.

Ice won't be safe to walk on (at least 3 inches) for awhile anyways.

I like using minnows for bass in the winter, ice fishing, but man it gets your fingers cold putting them on the hook all day long.
Its alway cool to watch your line slowly go in one dirction under the ice, many times the fish just seem to go around in circles all day, they hit good for an hour, then swim around and finally come back .
How many poles ya run zook? I usually use two and put them on either side of me for easy access, along with the smallest bobber I can find thats styrofoam. Never reel them up , I usually stand for the hookset and then bring the line in by hand.

REB;
The Swedish Pimple is a great jigging lure for yellow perch in some of the Texas lakes that have yellow perch, I have caught livewells full on Fork, and have caught several good sized bass while jigging for perch.

the redneck pimple is the best it has a distinct smell and texture. try it some time. put it on a strong flipping stick and some ropebecause when a fish latches down on a redneck pimple you will think it is a gator in a frozen lake.
