Default Hardbaits

Which hard bait do you own more of than any other? Most of us have tons of plastics & spinnerbaits but which hard bait do you have way too many of? I have a large collection of PopR type baits and Bagley Balsa baits and Rapala types but Rattle Trap type baits are my biggest space owner in my boxes.

Way to many lipless. To many pop-r baits and deep divers.

Bandit Crankbaits. I know it's not a lot compared to some of the other guys' collection on here, but I've got about 25 assorted sizes and colors.

I have a real mess of Fat Free Shad, Fingerlings, and Fry. Only because I got them on sale one day for 2 bucks each. I'm sure I'll lose a few eventually, and have a more reasonable amount.

Hmmm I'm with bcklash, never have enough. I couldn't answer that question because years ago I put together a crankbait game plan and I've pretty well followed through with it, Just completed my Normans "n" collection. I will say I have no lucky craft cranks though. I have boxes of pretty much everything else. Then I have a duffle bag full of spares of the ones that produce well reliably.
Now that I think about it, I do have too many rogues crammed into one box, does that count?

Too many? No such thing. Unless you ask my wife.

Bandit 100s, lipless, DD-22s, you name it. Add to that soft plastics, jigs, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, chatterbaits, tailspinners, spoons,....you get the idea. Add to that the close to $300 I just spent on jig and spinnerbait components-you get the idea.

At this point I mainly replace stuff rather than buy new stuff. Yeah, right

Just remember rule #1 of bass fishing: You can never have too much equipment!

I have 261 hardbaits, that's not counting 100 spinner baits 200+ jigs and a mountian on soft plastics.
Trust me.... I have to much stuff.

When I realized I had 75 lipless crankbaits
Almost that many rapala type baits.
A large collection of Bagley Balsa baits (varying depths) and about 40 PopR types.
I began to wonder about others. Granted some of these baits are over 30 years old but some still hit the water regularly.

Well, in my typical over-analytical style, I will look at the question, "How many hardbaits are reasonably needed?" I'll look at it from the standpoint that you only keep lures that produce well for you. If you like to experiment, the number may be more.

First, let's assume you need three of each type (some keep far more than three, but it's a decent average. (X 3)

Let's assume you will break each group down into four basic color groups (this is very minimal too...it will probably be more): very dark / natural colors / unnatural colors / white ( x 4)

Also, size is a general variable as well: small / medium / large (x 3)

Okay, let's break it down into basic hard bait types: crankbait - lipped, crankbait - lipless, jerkbait, topwater, swimbait.

Now, breaking these groups into subgroups,

Crankbait - lipped: with rattles / without rattles (X 2), shallow / medium / deep (X 3), jointed/unjointed (X 2), floating / sinking / suspending (X 3)

Crankbait - lipless: with rattles / without rattles (x 2), floating / sinking / suspending (x 3)

Jerkbait - shallow / medium / deep (x 3), sinking / suspending (x 2)

Topwater - popper / walking (x 2)

Swimbait - sinking / suspending (x 2)

When I do the math here, I come up with 1,872 hardbaits. This may sound a bit extreme (and it is!!!), but if you subscribe to the method of having 3 of each possible color/size/type hardbait, this is where it leads you. Obviously, very few anglers have two thousand lures of any kind at their disposal, but it does make 200-300 seem a bit less ridiculous.

This farce has been brought to you by your friendly neighborhood nerd.

Thank you.

Damn....I'm way behind, then. I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of oh, say 100-120 lures. That's only 6% of what NoFear says I need...

Oh, and figure up money wise how much 1,872 lures cost. What's the average cost of a crankbait or jerkbait? $5? $6?
That gets north of $9,000 real quick...

I dont think I have too many of any 1 brand of bait, but it is kinda odd that I have so many crankbaits compared to topwater lures or jerkbaits. I often throw cranks, but not that often.

Nofear, you are WAY overthinking it. Like Bama said, SHUT UP AND FISH!

Bama, I've probably got more worms than 2,000 that have never been wet. But just as sure as Zooker is ugly, if I don't haul every color of the rainbow the one I leave out is the only one they will hit

Who told you about my crankbait plan anyway nofear? I figured it with five different colors. BTW, did you include wood type and type of plastics used in manufacturing in your formula? Hi, my name is Basstech, and I am powerless over my obssesion with cranks. Isn't that like the first step?

I had too many a few years ago - went through them and found the ones I REALLY NEEDED TO KEEP. The rest (a little over 300) I sold. Resolved to not collect so many and invest in some nice premium baits to keep me in check. It didn'd work out, what can I say - it's an addiction. I haven't quite gotten back to the 300 but it's getting there. Lipless is what I have the most of, I love throwing them Spring and Fall. Behind them would be the medium diving cranks.
