Can you even tell a difference between 7:1.1 and a 6.4:1 ? I have a Revo S 6.4:1 ratio.

Yes you can. I have never owned a revo but I have owned the same models
Pflueger Trion Bait casting in 5.3 as opposed to 6.3

BPS extremes ; 7.1 as opposed to 6.3

and with the same brand reel, the gear ratios differences are easily noticable

Perhaps the new low profile designs have smaller spools that need a boost in gear ratio to pick-up a decent length of line per turn. Higher gears could mean more resistance, and harder cranking...
Now it is a fact that Advertisers and salesmen always brag about problems. If your reel is slower, it's a winch that will drag in the big ones! If it's faster, it's a burner that will pick up line quickly! If it's in the middle, it's an all-around-man, who won't wear you out, but still moves your bait quickly. See what I mean? Every problem becomes an advantage...
I love what Garry says here. A good salesman can make anything sound like the cats meow.

Right on the money in my opinion. I found that a 7.1.1 reel tends to over correct a spook when walking it in. With buzzbaits I would definitley go with a 7.1.1 reel because of the obvious advantage of being to get the bait on top faster.

More than anything else though you need to find out what you are personally comfortable with. Everything anyone says on here someone is going to dissagree with because of personal preference. Case in point, I use a faster reel when using a propbait opposed to a slower reel.

I use a 6.3:1. It is kind of the "standard" gear ratio now and works fine. I use a 7.1:1 for lipless cranks, a 4.7:1 for big cranks like a DD-22, a 5.2:1 for smaller deep cranks like a Deep Little N and a 6.3:1 for everything else.

Switching gear ratios really isn't something I notice. It does make a big difference, though, in throwing something like a DD-22. I can throw one all day on a 4.7:1 reel, but am only good for about 5 casts on a high speed reel.

Well, I like all of the input here, but like I figured, it's probably going to come down to personal preference, as usual.

I have a 7.1:1 reel and a 6.4:1 reel (both being used for other things, obviously). I guess I will just have to wait til it warms up, go out and try them both. I like a downward rod technique on spooks and poppers, so it's really hard to test it out on dry land.

I think any will work, really. I'm guessing a 6.3:1 ratio would do well, not too fast, but still fast enough to quickly eat up slack line.

Ya, it seems like a 7.1:1 would do better to me too!

But with you line, I think you would be better doing with 15. unless you're fishing schooling fish in pretty open water, 10's probably fine (IMO 12's better though).

Personally, I think I would like a slower reel for buzzbaits, I always have a hard time fishing them slow enough, I think a slower GR reel would help with that.

6/1/1 or ,6/2/1 glass two handed seeker 7 ft for most of my topwater or even for rattletraps, here 20 lb + drum and stripers also inhale them toss on 30 lb evolution braid, and yes even braid will sing when they take a run, rod, reel and line have never failed me on this .
G splash ,magnum popr,1/2 oz buzzbaits ,H20 swimbaits,3/4 and 1 oz pointer traps mostly in american shad color.
While the sammy is a touted bait here on ky lake just about everything mentioned out preforms it.

That's just my opinion.
I'm beginning to feel this way, too. Across the board.
