Default My First "Big" Bass

Howdy all.........

After a 30 year break from fishing I'm back into it this summer. Mainly fished for walleyes as a kid. I got the itch to get back into fishing and bought a 12 foot jon boat with a trolling motor. First time out this summer my daughter and we caught 15 small bass and was instantly hooked on bass fishing. I caught this 3lb 4 oz largemouth last week and is my biggest bass thus far. Pales in comparison to some of the beasts I've seen on this site, but still pumped. Hoping to beat it by the end of summer. For reference I caught it using a Rapala DT6.

Nice fish! I didn't even know they grew 'em that big up in the U.P.

Most of us don't care about the size of the fish, we like seeing those big smiles and hear the happy stories. That is a nice fish.

Don't sweat it, catch, 3#+ is big in a state where it snows half the year! I'm always thrilled to break the 3# mark! Welcome to the forum! Good to have another Michigander here, even if it is a Yooper lol.
Kick off your Sorels, put your feet up, and beware the bait monkey!

Thanks all for the kind words. I play quite a bit of online poker and am involved in a few poker forums and 95% of the posts are filled with rude and sarcastic posts. It appears bass fisherman are different which I'm thankful for.

Yep, I'm a yooper and it wasn't actually snowing when I caught the bass, but I'm sure the white crap is just around the corner.....lol. Walleyes are the king up here and to be honest I do not know anybody around here that primarily fishes for bass. As such I honestly don't know just how big we grow them, but hoping to know a lot more my the end of summer. Our lakes are normally iced up by mid-November through mid-April and as much as I'm enjoying myself I have no intentions of ice fishing. There are 222 lakes in the county I live in and there are at least a dozen lakes that I know of that only have bass and panfish. I've been out 6 times so far this summer and I've only seen 1 other boat so the bass certainly aren't getting highly pressured. My daughter and I have combined for 22 largemouths so far and we've been having a blast. Hopefully I'll have a lot more pictures in the coming weeks. Thanks again all for the kinds words.

Jeff

Dude i used to catch 5&6lbers in Idaho all the time where the lakes freeze over, its all about the fisherman,I think there is more big fish in idaho than in south carolina where I live,bc I have only caught 3 this year over 6lbs, go to idaho and it will be a normal day to catch a couple 4's or 5's

I go to Ironwood every year in January to ski and see lots of those lakes when I am driving by. I always plan to go there in the summer but it is an 11 hour drive from here. I've even been to Hurley a time or two.

That is a great bass, especially a largemouth for up there. The smallmouth might be hard to find this time of year but keep at it and you should get some of those too. And welcome to the forum!
