Not once has one ever stripped line off my reel, that's what I consider a fight. I am using light tackle too most of the time I catch them, 6' 9'' ML rod, XF tip, 8# test.

How many bluegills have stripped line off your reel?

None, I dont consider them a good fight either. Actually there are no bluegills here, just pumpkinseed sunfish.

Oddly enough, bluegills have been dubbed the best fighting freshwater fish, pound for pound

ehhh....pound for pound I would say smallmouths win hands down. Like I said im not catching bluegills, its pumpkinseeds so they could fight differently...but i doubt it.

What do you consider putting up a good fight?

Perhaps you should try some saltwater fishing like this.

Haven't ever really classified it. In a nutshell, a good fight is fighting bigger than it is

Ha very funny. I'm sorry I just don't consider fish, that average under 1#, having the ability to put up a good fight. They don't strip line or go on runs, rarely jump, and never break your line off.

Where as the fight of a smallie consists of line stripping, long runs, aerial maneuvers, head shakes that could throw your bait, running under your boat, and taking you into cover that could break your line.

You also can't keep an 8" smallmouth

There are better tasting fish out there, so that doesn't concern me.

My point was the fact that there are huge differences in size between the two. They also fight differently, so claiming a rock bass or gill isn't a good fighter because of what a smallmouth can do holds no water.

Muskies can do a lot of things a smallmouth can't, doesn't mean a smallie isn't a good fighter

True, I see what you saying. I guess all fish put up a fight, who wouldnt if you had a hook in your cheek. Its just hard to compare between between species of different sizes, you could however compare the fight of a largemouth vs. a smallmouth.

I love getting an ultra lite outfit with 4lb test and go perch jerkin or catchin redeyes or any other fish. It really is relaxing and fun. They fight hard enough.
It's a great way to teach kids how to fight a fish.

right on lash. also catch a gill of ANY kind on a fly rod. then you get a good fight there. IN MY OPION. the only time i didn't get a good fight out of a fish with a hook in it's jaw was the one that i didn't hook. which is pretty often, lol. there i said it before ya'll could, hahahahahahaha.

Grasshopper,

Fish have different fighting styles. Longer, slenderer fish such as pike or even smallmouth are agile enough to take it to the air and jump because mechanically, their body is more suited to that.

Look at a bluegill. Its a short, stubby, plate shaped thing. It is always at its best trying to use what power it has. And here is the problem - if it only weights 1 pound, and you weigh 200, and your line can handle 10 - its not gonna win.

It has nothing to do with the quality of the fight, its just mechanics. Like if you were 500 pounds and hooked a 10 pound bass good on 150 lb test, if that bass doesnt throw the hook you're gonna get it.

To get a good idea of what a bluegill would fight like if it were bigger, take on a 5 pound flounder or stingray. They will pull your arm out of the socket.

Or, just try fishing for them with ultralight fly or spinning tackle.

AMEN, BRUTHAH!

Bluegill on 2lb or even 4lb test and a little 5' ultralight spinning combo is a blast!

That is the best way to hook a kid on fishin' take 'em to a pond full of bluegill/sunfish or what ever and let them hammer away with some worms and an ultralight rig... They'll be "hooked" for life!

I'm just thankful for whatever I can get to take the hook.
