In muddy water fish will be very tight to cover, so maybe it was sunnier in the afternoon and positioned the fish on a specific part of the cover. Could that be why?

I think you can do well at any time, but consider the visibility issue.
There are two components to color...brightness and hue. In low light, hue is almost indistinguishable. Like in deep water fishing, the bass can't tell red from blue from green, etc. So what I would recommend is if the water is only semi-muddy, or if the sun is very bright, use bright color lures like chartreuse or white. Even a black colored lure would contrast less with the water than a brightly colored lure. If the water is extra muddy, or the sunlight is very dim, use dark colors like purple or black, to give the lure maximum contrast from the muddy water. If it's night time, color doesn't matter, imho, but theoretically, a white or yellow lure would have the most contrast by moonlight. Noise and vibration would be the keys then.
