Default Rod testing in the store isle is important.

You often see people testing rods in the sporting goods isles.
There are some things you can look for.

How fast or slow the action is. Lure weight specs. But the biggest question what bait are you going to use.

It's a good idea to bring the reel you'll mount to see how the two feel together. Two quality pieces still may not compliment one another. Check for any damage from shipping and handling and over all fit and finish. Never grab a rod by the tip and bend it between you're fingers. To check the action press apply slight pressure with an open hand or press it lightly against the floor being careful not to mark up the rod or tip top.
