Default casting distance

What is a safe or good distance to be away from the shore line? either using a baitcaster or spinning rig. just how close can you be that wont spook the fish? i think some baits you want to be fairly close to the bank , but what about others?

thanks,

dawg

DAWG,

If you keep your foot off the damn trolling motor, you can get very close. By putting the trolling motor on the lowest speed that will move you and keep it constant in stead of off and on, you can cruise within 10 ft of whatever kind of cover you are fishing. The one thing to remember is to keep the sun to your face. If you have the sun behind you so you make an outline and/or a shadow, you will spook fish no matter how quiet you are.

I travel against the current. Gives better boat control.

I always know exactly how far my casts go. They're either six inches too short, or six inches too far.

Always fish into the current and bring your bait back with the current.

DAWG,

I am in full agreemant with BASSMAN and CAJUN. You have to work your boat into the current to have any control, or the current pushing against the broad rear of your boat will keep you correcting all the time.

Thanks ,that only makes sense since the current is what brings the bait fish towards them, and you can set the trolling motor at its lowest speed for better control.

What they all said. Just wait till you get wind AND current, that makes it even tougher And depending on what and how your fishing, you can be 2 feet from where you're casting. I was fishing this morning and caught 2 bass within 2-4 feet from the boat. Of course I was fishing heavy vegetation, just got my boat into it, and fished the spot for 30 minutes, then move to the next spot. Didn't have to use the trolling motor, since the vegetation was keeping me in place.
