Powerbass, I agree that sorting by type is the way to go.

To scale down, I have purchased 4 tackle boxes that stay at home. They are organized by cranks, topwaters, jerkbaits, and jigs/hairjigs. In the top part of the boxes, I keep plastics. One box has worms, another has tubes, another has creature baits/grubs, and the fourth is flukes/miscellaneous.

What I do is pick some stuff from each box and load into a tackle bag and a half (the half bag must have room for raingear, suntan lotion, flashlights, and some stogies). This is all I take. It is still a lot but I know if I scale down some more, I will always leave what I need at home.

An assortment of jigs and trailers and a few different spinnerbaits.

JB On my crank box (3700) I seperate the lures by depth, on the bottom of each lure with a fine sharpie I right the running depth, it usually stays on, that way if it gets mixed up in the wrong slot I'll know. I also mark the plastic dividers that hold them which in turn lets me know where to put them back to.

My answer BPS president and Plano 5 box carrier. All I need and even the stuff I dont. The addition of the president just means I dont carry my spinnerbait box anymore.

I emptied a 3700 and tried to figure this out. I'd have a nervous breakdown if I could only bring one. "What if that's not what the big fish will take today?" I shed tears while pretending that's all I could bring. I am no longer going to read these "if you could only..." threads.

I used to take them out for the boxes, I now keep them in their containers they are sold in. I think it keeps the oil that is on Culprit worms that I fish, there a little longer. The other brands with scent, I dont think taking them out would hurt to much..and the only other thing I discovered with taking them out of the pouch and into the plano box, is that on hot sunny days they bleed colors out, esp. chartruse. It funny, if you add a few charturse worms in with any other colored one , they will bleed streaks into the worms lol

A little hint for those new or newer to the jig. When bass are TIGHT to cover is when the jig excels for me. When they are willing to hit other lures I's be throwing them, when it slows up out comes the jig rod.

For my plastic storage, I could care less, I prefer them in bags, but boxes work too. For amount of plastics to carry, a box is better, less bulkier!
